Well, after I mentioned this swap to toobroke awhile back, he went ahead and did the upgrade on his.. He says Excellent results, so I ordered one too.. Pulled the old one, modified the wheel, made the spacer, but had to leave.. Will put the upgraded blower in tomorrow. Hopefully with as good a result as Steve got

ALL DONE! Its is a very tight spot on an 81, you have to do everything from the top. BUT... IT REALLY DOES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!!! you have about 1/3 nmore wheel, with larger, more pitched blades, it moves air now.. Only costs $16 , a few hours of cussing, probably a 12 pack of beer will help !! .....If any of you decide to do it, get with Steve or me, we can save you time by telling you exactly how to modify everything.. You only need the wheel, not a C4 motor too, as some have said. .. In my black car it will be nice.. Its 104* today

No, when fish and I did it we just told the parts man we wanted a blower wheel and didn't care how big or how long it was.

Of COURSE we have a part number! It's a 4-Seasons #35601 and it's an inch longer than the stock wheel.

To put the longer wheel in you'll need a 3/8" thick plywood spacer and 1' long #8 hex head metal screws. I can send you a picture of the spacer that I scanned but you might have to reduce it's size as when I sent it to fish and he printed it it came out about 4% too big.

If you're serious about doing the upgrade I'll send you the pictures I took along the way. Here's the picture I took of the new wheel and the original wheel and also a picture of the plywood spacer glued onto the motor's flange.

If your C3 has A/C it's definitely worth the small expense and effort to make the modification because it'll damned near double the air flow. I can actually feel the cold air hitting my face and right ear as I drive along.

Another thing you need to do is completely seal your condenser to the radiator frame to prevent air from being sucked in from the sides of the condenser. Before I sealed mine my A/C was totally worthless in town but now it works great in stop-and-go traffic.

Lose weight first.,its tight in there....lol.. seriously, get the spacer pattern from Toobroke, I had to reduce it 5% on my printer to be perfect. lay out on any material you choose that's minimum 3/8 thick. cut out. remove old blower wheel, fit spacer on motor, be sure you have plenty clearance for new wheel. glue and/or screw together .drill bolt holes thru spacer, . grind ,sand about 1/8 inch out of the hole in blower hsg. .. remove wheel before placing motor in fenderwell.. reassemble in fenderwell. [ IT WILL NOT GO IN THERE ASSEMBLED, or at least I couldn t get it in] place motor/wheel in housing, start screws [ need 1/2inch longer screws now] turn on fan to be sure it doesn t rub anywhere.. tighten screws , check for leaks reconnect hose to motor ... I sealed everything on mine with silicone .. did that help? now enjoy about 40% more cold air in your face... OHH one last thing, remove the Expansion tank bottle!!
