I just did mine the other day. It can be very frustrating! I suggest taking the boot off the collar under the shifter, and leave the collar right under the knob. Then turn the collar to the right as far as it will go (1:00 position) and pull up hard on the knob. To make it more interesting some of the collars are secured with a plastic tie, mine was.
