I have a 1981 and will be putting a ZZ4 in soon and for those of you that have done this what changes have to be made to do so. I hear water pump needs to be changed?
yeah, as long as the belt groove lines up with your crank pulley. or you can use a bushing on your 5/8 shaft to take up the slack in the 3/4 pulley .. theres plenty ways to skin that cat .. BUT it absolutely must be a SHORT pump..the 3/4 shaft pumps were considered heavy duty .. but pumps are much improved since those days. I run a Hi -Volume Edelbrock Aluminum pump on my stroker
whoever you are getting the turn-key engine from, knows what on it.. they should be able to tell you exactly what you need. as far as the pump, it should already be installed with serpentine system aligned. you should have no problem .
A couple of days ago I was reading an article on the ZZ4 crate engines and found they fall far short of their advertised 355 hp. The test engine only made a dismal 318 hp because of it's whimpy cam and cylinder heads. if I recall the cam's duration was 208/221 which makes it a very mild cam; certainly not a cam capable of making 1 hp per cubic inch. There is a 385 hp version of the ZZ4 that would be a better choice if you're wanting good performance.
