Prior to 1965 engines were mounted on the front and rear sides; leaving the transmission hanging from the rear of the engine because the early models had "X" frames with no cross members. So those bell housings used the top center (7th) hole to fasten them to the engine. Once the cross members were used to support the rear of the transmissions that top center hole was no longer needed but all of the later blocks still have those top holes for those occasions when a later engine is installed in the earlier 1955 thru 1964 cars. A bit of trivia for you.
