I often have C3 owners ask me how their A/C controls work. The controls are really quite simple:

MAX A/C

1. Closes the wiper plenum door air intake which makes the cabin air recirculate.

2. Closes the heater control valve which stops the flow of coolant through the heater core.

NORM A/C

1. Opens the wiper plenum door and allows fresh air to enter the cabin.

2. Opens the heater control valve which allows coolant to flow through the heater core.

In the NORM A/C position you can adjust the "blend door" wheel (early C3's) or lever (later C3's) to add some heat to your cold air. Usually used after the sun goes down and full cold isn't needed as much.
