Considering that the lift struts are the only thing that supports the rear hatch in staying open, that would be the only thing possible to fail. Both of them failing at the same time...probably not. More than likely one failed previously and you just didn't notice it. The other one was probably able to support the entire weight. However, the extra pressure on it probably made it wear out quicker. I don't know the life of a lift strut, but 5-6 years of opening and closing probably is enough to wear it out.
