I have owned my '71 for 12 years during which time I logged well over 150,000 miles. I have noticed during the colder winter months my speedometer will often read 20 mph slow at 60 mph for 100 miles or more before suddenly reading normal. Same with its tachometer as it'll often read 200 rpm slow for an hour or more. Mechanical speedometers and tachometers operate by "The Lenz Effect" in which their NON MAGNETIC aluminum drum is effected by its internal spinning magnet. It's impossible for a mechanical speedometer or tachometer to read fast but they can read slow under cold conditions.

To understand "The :Lenz Effect" Google it and watch the You Tube videos about it.
