Whenever you buy a new mechanical fuel pump test its check valves before installing it. Just plug the return line nipple with your finger and then put pressure into the 3/8" inverted flare outlet fitting. If you can blow ANY air through the pump backwards its check valves aren't sealing and you need to return the pump as being defective.

Back in the '50's and 60's fuel pumps usually lasted 100,000 to 150,000 miles but now days they usually fail before 10,000 miles because of their lousy Chinese check valves.
