Looking or advise on buying used C6

June 2012, I purchased my first Vette. I quickly learned and found great joy in my 94 coupe. After "cutting my teeth" on a C4, I am considering upgrading to a C6. Last night I took for a lengthy test drive a 3 year old C6 Coupe with less than 5,000 miles (automatic tran.). The car is what I expected it to be. It certainly is like new condition, but I have one concern. Throughout the test drive, I kept smelling "smoking oil" (as if some residue oil was dripping on the exhaust manifold). Returning to the dealership, I inspected the engine compartment at length; and could not find anything. When the car was pulled back in to the showroom, I caught a wiff of the same smell at rear of the car. This especially struck me as "odd". So...the red flags are up....What do you think might be causing this? Is there a possibility there is an engine problem? Has anyone else experience this situation? Thanks.

I have and AutoCheck Report from dealer. This car had a vehicle registration event for two consecutive years. Then nothing for 2012. Then January 2013 was reported at auto auction and subsequently purchased by this dealer. **MORE RED FLAGS** Question: what happen in 2012?
I sure would like to talk to the first owner. Is there anyway to research contact information for the original owner? Are there reports out there better than the one I have?
Not sure if there are better reports out there, but if you're wary, there are lots of nice used c6's on the market.
Ask the dealer to run a maintenance report from the GMVIS system. That will list any service work or recalls done on the car by a GM dealer. I had the dealer run one on my used 2008 coupe and discovered that the battery had been replaced under warranty shortly before I bought the car (it also showed annual oil changes as the car was a gaaarage queen). It's definitely worth looking at......

One benefit of your dealer purchasing the car in January is that he has now had it for 90 days and most dealers look at turning the money a lot more often than that. He is ready to sell. Being he bought the car in January, he bought it cheap because he knew he was going to have to winter it.

All these things come into play when you are buying. It gives you an advantage knowing that you are the first real buyer that has had an interest enough to go this far, and come this close to buying. It is like putting money in your pocket.

If this isn't a Chevrolet dealer, have the chevy dealer pick it up and pay for an inspection. Well worth the hundred or so that they would charge.

Good chance that whatever the smell is from could be caught and fixed or give you some peace of mind.

Good luck.
but if you're wary, there are lots of nice used c6's on the market.
It was not going well with this venture. So I backed off...then the next thing I knew...a gem of C6 fell right into my lap. A beautiful 2006 with low miles. I have officially joined the C6 clan. I have my 94 Coupe posted for sale on SV. If you know of anyone looking for a very clean C4...send them my way. Thanks

Sounds good! Any pics? Plans for mods?
Congrats on finding a car!
Snapped a couple of quick photos in the garage. 94 Coupe in the way a little. Post some better ones later. No plans to do anything but drive and enjoy the car. Planning on some roads trips to Eastern PA, Erie area and Southern North Carolina.
