I recently bought a 98 c5 and i feel like i am missing some horsepower in the engine. I have a vararam cold air intake and a corsa exhaust. Is there anything i can do to try to get some horepower back that may be hiding or other inexpensive ways to increse horsepower? I want to get a chip for it but have been unable to find any that seemed reliable for 98's. Any sugestions?
How about adding nitrous? What would i need to do to the engine before i added it? And i know its gonna cost me money to increse the hp. I was looking at little things at first possible a power duct...
Now for the serious answer.... This won't add horsepower, but change the gear ratio- the car will wake up like you won't believe, and that can be very inexpensive if you do it yourself, and a grand or so if you pay someone else to do it.
I have a 2000 manual all stock. The factory gears are 3.42, what would be the "gear of choice" be if I was going to keep everything else stock? I do 80% of my driving on the Interstate ( 75 - 80 mph cruzin speed ) so I don't want to go nuts with a gear ratio. Thanks
if all you driving is interstate, then bumping ratio to 3.90 or 4.10 is probably not your best option..if you ve improved intake and exhaust, headers will help somewhat, a good tune and you re about as far as you can go without going internal on the motor..the next step is heads ,cam etc. ...like we said..more money = more horsepower..and if money is no problem, take Gig s advice and bolt on a Supercharger kit, gain 150-175 HP @ a cost of about $6K
New to this forum, but not to Vettes. I guess I would place your options in categories and yes as all have stated, there is no free lunch. But, if you use nitrous it is relatively inexpensive and quick to do, but it is not horsepower continuously there and one backfire on some puddle nitrous in the manifold will have you picking splintered manifold and hood out of your windshield. Though there are ways to avoid this. Supercharging is great as it is horsepower on tap. You just have to decide between Positive Displacement and Centrifugal, and the costs. Again if you get boost happy, plan on forged internals and upgraded driveline components. Turbo is another option, again relatively expensive, on tap when you need it, but will also add on other upgrades to handle the increased power, and can still be subject to lag in certain instances. Or you can remain naturally aspirated and get into the engine past the normal bolt ons with heads, cam, stoker kits etc. In the end it can be just as expensive as supercharging and net less gains. Decisions, decisions. Name your poison and go for it. Oh and by the way, if you are a manual trans, forget the stock clutch, or if an auto the stock stall converter. So welcome to mod heaven or hell depending on the way you look at it. And yes a set of 3.90 or 4.10 will give you a real seat of the pants dyno increase and a few tenth's off your 1/4 mile time. It will also have you running through a set of tires really quick. When the smoke clears from your stop light burn out you will notice the tread has mysteriously disappeared from those rear tires. Anyway, my thoughts for what they are worth, about two cents. Good luck.
