Hi Guys,

It's been a while. Still going strong with my '82 Vette "Rudy". I had a great summer with him. I love that car more than anything in this world.

I am having a problem now, so I want to ask you guys for your help since you've always given me excellent advice in the past. When I put my car in drive it BANGS into drive. I know that the idle is too high, but I was also told that my motor mount is bad. When I open the hood and put the car in drive, I can see the driver's side of the engine lift up. This, I am told, is an indication that the motor mount is bad.

A few questions: Do I need locking or non-locking motor mounts? Can this be done without putting the car on a lift? How hard will it be to do this?
Also: How do you lower the idle?

Yes, any time your engine lifts up on the left side that indicates the motor mount has separated.

The '82's came from the factory with real nice heavy duty locking motor mounts but I have found the replacement locking mounts are poorly made. So I solved the problem by buying standard non-locking mounts then drilled a 3/8" hole thru the middle of them and put a flat head 3/8" bolt thru them with a self-locking nut on the inside (block side). The bolt prevents the mount from pulling apart when the rubber eventually fails.

As far as your excessive idle speed goes e-mail me at sw82vette@yahoo.com and I'll help you get the speed reduced to a reasonable level. The CrossFires don't have a separate throttle return spring like a carburetor does so the idle speed can easily vary from moment-to-moment and day-to-day. The idle speed is controlled solely by the two IAC motors BUT if the throttle bodies don't completely close by themselves the idle speed will increase. Properly adjusted the idle rpm should be around 550 in DRIVE and about 700 rpm in PARK.

you can replace the mounts without putting it on a lift, but you wiil need jack up front to get under it, then lift the motor slightly to get it out.. its tight in there but really not that difficult..

Thank you. I knew that I could count on you, Toobroke, and you, Fishslayer, to help. I was really worried about the car having to go on a lift because then I would have no choice but to bring it to a mechanic. I'd rather that we do the work ourselves. I have to get "the team" together to do this, so I hope that it will happen in a week or two. There isn't a big rush right now because the summer is over, I am back at work, and, unfortunately, I just don't have the time to use the car as much as I would like to. When I am ready to do the work, I will email you for guidance with the idle adjustment, Toobroke. Thanks again. You guys really are the best and I appreciate all of your help. Wish I had something more to offer to the site than just asking questions and asking for help all the time....

Thanks, Fishslayer. I appreciate it. Now, I have one more question. Since my husband and his friend (my "team") are kind of dragging their feet on getting all of this started, I want to know if it is okay to drive the car like this. What should I know about driving it with a broken motor mount? I've been told different things, but I trust you guys to give me the best information and advice. (I want to drive it to a meet next Saturday, which involves a drive over the bridge and mostly street driving. The fastest I would probably go is 55 mph.)

it should not be a problem unless you make jack-rabbit starts.. as long as you drive normally it won t lift ..don t hold the brake and give it throttle or do full throttle passing ..... you will be fine
