The power steering on my car has not been working.
I'm thinking my steering cylinder is not working ( but wouldn't that mean the cylinder would be stuck??) the car is drivable but not comfortable the pump is full of oil and spins ( so i assume thats good) the lines look good

David, is there any assist at all? When a power steering pump runs all it does is send oil to the control valve then that oil returns to the pump so you should see a certain amount of "movement" in the reservoir. If your belt isn't tight enough it could be slipping so check that first. Also you can crack the lines loose at the cylinder then turn your steering wheel back and forth. You should see some seepage from both of the hose connections. It's doubtful your cylinder is so worn it won't do anything but I have seen it happen on trucks that used the same system. If you have an air compressor you can take the hoses off the cylinder then apply air pressure to one of the ports. NO air should come out of the other port. If air blows out freely then the piston inside is totaled. |
