After rebuilding my engine, new dart heads,Edelbrock runners, new injectors, throttle body, hedman headers, new fuel regulator, new oil pump and so on,my shifter(automatic)was hard going into drive.Goes into reverse easily.I did have a new torch converter installed to make the new roller cam idle right.
Anyway, while preparing to drive my baby to the beach,I was trying to put it in drive I smelled something burning now it won't go in drive at all, still goes in reverse. Any help would be appreciated |

From what you're describing it sounds like your shifter cable is up against the exhaust pipe.............................. |

Haynes pg 7b-2 tells how to adjust your shifter cable and it is done from underneath with the car up on jackstands, also there is a TV cable that is checked and adjusted in the engine compartment...........Also, check your fluid, sounds like your tranny might be burning up for whatever reason and the fluid color might show that.

Help me out here. When you put it into DRIVE does it feel like it's "clicking" into Drive? And does it feel like it's "clicking" into REVERSE? Or does the shifter feel funny? As you recently had the engine and transmission out I would think you have something installed wrong. And the smell of "something burning" makes me think something ended up against an exhaust pipe. I would do this: Disconnect the shifter cable from the transmission shift lever then push/pull your shifter lever back and forth and see if it's smooth (should be effortless). Then put your shift lever into the PARK position and also put your transmission shift lever into the PARK position. The end of the cable should JUST attach to the transmission lever. If it doesn't easily attach then you'll have to make a little adjustment to where the cable attaches to the cable bracket. |

Procedure in Haynes is the same but they just loosen the nut for the cable, do the adjustment and then tighten the nut. 7B-3para 5 |

It was a quick fix,I removed thr guard that goes over the shifter cable ,and it works fine now.Havent pinpointed that burning smell yet ,although I think I have a small oil leak somewhere which is hitting the headers
