Default Matching numbers?

So how important are matching numbers for a cars ability to hold value or appreciate over the years?
I have two cars in mind as an investment/toy, one is a 74 matching numbers car with 48K miles and the other is a 68 with 72K on the clock but they are unknown miles and it has a replacement motor. Both cars are comparable condition wise and are driver class rigs. I like the 68 but wonder if it will not hold value as well as one all original. Thanks for any input.

Important to some-not to others.
How much more is the '68 non matching
car than the '74 matching car now? These
cars will never be like the previous generation
for value. I'd like the "68 best too.

The 68 is $16,500 and the 74 is $13,900. Both are asking prices and a little room to move I think in each one. The 74 is a 190 horse 350 motor, not sure on the 68, I need to pull the numbers off of it.
Thanks for the reply.

68-72s are more in demand, less available and worth more than a 74 .. all the rare collector C3 s are in that group.. L88, LT1 , ZL1, ZR1,LS6, LS7, all in 68-72...1974, not so much, first year for the 5mph rubber bumpers F&R .. ...that price sounds high for a 74 to me unless it was a 454 car ... but its your money, buy what you like

I agree with you, the 74 is top dollar...but it's very clean. I want a 68-72 and would like a numbers matching car if I can, just don't know if it matters that much. Thanks for the response.

68 to 72 are more likely to be a collector car.73could go that way too. 74 and up unless its a big block will never be worth as much as a early car.the late cars you can modify how you like and won't hurt anything, unless you do something really nuts like a station wagon kit.

I never really understood the whole "keeping it original" and "numbers matching" aspects of having a car. when I hear all original the first thing that comes to my mind is "so what needs to be replaced" =/. To be honest I would rather have a 1960's or 70's corvette body with a 2013 corvette's guts. you would have the obviously better look of the older corvette body style's with the BADASS horse power, handling, braking, suspension and everything else that's so great from a new corvette. I'm part of the younger generation though so idk if that's just something the older guys like to have everything original. I care more about functionality, drive-ability, and fun compared to an all original vette that drives like a brick (compared to today's cars) and only has 190 horsepower. im not hating on the all original lover's though. It is nice to see and feel how things were done back then compared to now.

don t be fooled into thinking that all the old Corvettes had no "power" .... there were many options that would tear up some asphalt back then.. the L-88 s rated at only 435HP ,only needed a set of long tubes to crank out 550HP right from GM, and would blow away everything but THE ZR1 today.... and there were others .. and there are many of us with Resto-mod C3S that live on the "wild side" now..
