1984 I replaced the 1) filter 2) file pump relay 3) fuel pump relay connector. The old connector was "fried" it looks like only 3 of the 5 wires were connected to the relay. After these repairs I dove it for about 10 minutes, the longer it was running the worse it got. It barely runs now.
The gas gage does not work and the mechanic who replaced the pump left the tank with about a 1/2 gallon. When I checked the filter and found it dry I added 3 gallons now it runs great. Thank you to those who gave help to this very amature mechanic. I use the odometer reading (10 miles/gallon) to keep the tank 1/4 full, the tank must of had less then a gallon when the pump was replaced by a "professional" who didn't mentioned it was almost out of gas. It had at least 3 gallons when I was able to get the car to the shop. I read somewhere else of an early failure of a NAPA pump. Last edited by Coachg; 08-01-2012 at 09:50 AM. Sounds like your fuel pump is not getting enough voltage. The fried connector is a clue. I would try hotwiring the fuel pump directly to the battery as a test. If it then runs fine there is something wrong with your wiring in the fuel pump power circuits.

The burned connector tells you the problem is in the connection. When everything is new the connectors plug on firmly and make good contact but over time with repeated heating and cooling cycles the connections start getting bad which causes them to get hot and eventually burn up. You'll either have to replace the connector or splice spade terminals on each of the wires then plug them on individually. But replacing the connector is the best way to go as it ensures the correct wires go to the correct terminals.

He has already replaced the connector. Therefore, the next step is to bypass the relay wiring and see if the engine runs good with the fuel pump wired directly to the battery. If so there is something wrong with the fuel pump wiring. If it continues to run poorly and the fuel pressure is good then there is something else wrong, maybe the ign system is breaking down, etc........also check codes

If you missed it his tank was dry, check his first post, he added this:

Yep, that would probably affect how the car runs.

You have gone thru 3 fuel pumps in a short time. That is probably because you do not keep enough fuel in the tank to lubricate and cool them. Since your fuel gauge is not working suggest filling up the tank and then refilling it every 200 miles. That should assure that you never get below a 1/4 tank which will keep the fuel pump cool and lubricated.
