Default Q Jet to Edelbrock Manifold

I have a '77 with a Carter Quadrajet carb and it sits atop an Edelbrock intake manifold. The carb is original to the car. I don't see any adapter plate between the carb and intake. I know the Q Jets are spread bore and thought the Edelbrock intakes were square bore, however, that does not appear to be the case. Did or does Edelbrock make a spread bore intake so that the Qjet bolts on without an adapter. The intake is a Performer and I suspect that it might be old. I would appreciate any information on this set-up. Thanks.

yes Edelbrock has made a direct bolt -on manifold for spreadbore carbs for a long time. needs no adapter.. you have a Carter built Q-Jet?

The Rochester QuadraJets are a gold-colored zinc body spread bore with a removable aluminum base and the Carters are an all-aluminum body square bore with the base being a part of the body. The QuadraJets use 3-1/2" long 5/16" mount bolts in the front and have enormous secondary air-valve butterflies whereas the Carters use short mount bolts (or nuts) in the front and have small secondary butterflies. Also the QuadraJets are square in shape whereas the Carters are rectangular in shape.

Edelbrock makes a "performer" in both styles and with or without EGR capability and should have a 4-digit number cast on it like 2101 (spread bore) or 2701 (square bore). The 4-digit part number is located just to the left of the distributor and just in front of the oil pressure sender.

Toobroke, I heard, years ago, that GM actually sub-contracted some Q-jets to Carter during a strike or some such crap..and that a very small number were made by them.. identical in every way but with Carter stamped on it..I m not sure if its true.. thats why I asked if he really had a Carter built Quadrajet.. have you ever heard of that?

No Fish, I had never heard that so if it's true it's news to me. Out of curiosity I just Googled it and found Carter did indeed make QuadraJets when Rochester couldn't keep up with the production demand and the Carter QuadraJets found their way into many of the G.M. lines.

So................it's true!

I should have been more specific. On the carb it says manufactured by Carter under license from GM. I believe Carter made the carbs when Rochester could not meet demand. What I have learned about the codes stamped on the carb is as follows.
Carter Quadrajet 17057204:
1705 - the production run from '76-'79
7 -1977
2- four barrel
0 - Chevy
4- automatic trans.

Date Stamp 1727AYN:
172 - 172nd day (Jun. 21)
7 - 1977
AYN - (not sure about this but, I think, it means "meets federal standards"

So, I take it that this carb is a Qjet spread bore that is on an Edelbrock intake that is also for a spread bore since there is no adaptor plate to convert a spread bore intake to accept a square bore carb. Correct? Sorry but, it gets a bit confusing. I have looked all over the intake and all I find is the Performer name and no #. It is difficult to see around the distributor. I look again. Thanks.

According to what I read on the internet the Carter QuadraJets were pretty common during the early-to-mid 70's and were found on all G.M. brands.

Well fish, we may have seen one but just didn't know it. From the pictures I've seen of them they have appeared to be an aluminum color rather than the bronze color Rochesters are. Thinking back I know I have seen a few that looked different but never got up close and really studied them.
