I finally fixed my code 42 esc problem. It needed a new computer, but the first one was bad sending me in other directions. Now after 2 months It is fixed,I also replaced the prom with an original updated gm one.Ok all is good. Before I replaced the computer It never told the tconverter when to engage.Never bothered me because I had it wired so I could force the lockup to engage when I wanted to.Now that I have the new computer when I drive very mellow It shifts from first to 2nd then locks up to fast then third followed by a fast lockup and forth the same.when I drive spirited the car drives good no lock up in 2nd or 3rd and 4th locks up above 40mph.I just want to put anoverride swich back in ,one that can turn off the lockup.I figure into the brake switch is the way to go.by the brake ther are 2 sets of wires a very thick set (heavy gauge) and a very thin pair.any Ideas which wires to splice into Thank u all forum members as always

Danny, the stock prom will allow a 3rd gear lockup as low as 25 mph and that's why I finally put a manual kill switch in mine. But then later on after I put an ADS Super Chip in it I found the chip only allowed a 4th gear lockup at 45 mph (or higher with more throttle). The converter will remain unlocked any time you have it under full power until it reaches around 85 mph in 3rd gear and then it'll force it to lock. That's just the way the stock chip is programmed. But all of the aftermarket chips won't allow a 3rd gear lockup at all; just 4th gear and only at speeds of 45 mph or more. You can control your lockup by using a 0-15 psi Hobbs pressure switch screwed into the 4th servo pressure tap and bypass the computer completely. By using a pressure switch in the 4th servo pressure tap it'll only lock in 4th and automatically unlock when it downshifts into 3rd. For more details contact me at sw82vette@yahoo.com |

I'm sorry Danny. I read your post but I didn't address your last question as to which wires at the brake switch to splice into. The two larger wires go to the brake lights and the two smaller wires go to the torque converter disconnect. When you apply your brakes the switch breaks the connection going to the torque converter clutch so you'll want to tie your kill switch into the two smaller wires. Rather than cutting my wires I rigged up my kill switch wires so they would simply plug in to the connections. But like I said before all of the aftermarket chips will only allow a 4th gear lockup which will totally solve your problem. But if your car is still subject to smog testing it won't pass with the aftermarket chip because the chip alters the timing curve and fuel delivery. |

Really want to thank everyone for there help. The purple wire did it.Still have to determine why the new gm chip causes the car to lock in 2nd and 3rd so early,or even why it locks up in second or third to begin with.It sounds like a good idea on paper but the computer is to slow to unlock when you give it a little gas once it is locked in second.Ideally the tranny should only lock up in forth, and unlock fast when u give it moderate gas.Any thoughts? but forum members thanks for all your input.I don't respond much to questions because I am not a pro on vettes even though I have had 14 in my life, all c1,s c2' and c3's.unless I know the exact answer I rather not give slipshot opinions. Now I have to rest my back fro going under the dash to get at that brake switch.Old vette owners just fade away. bless

It will only lock up in 3rd and 4th gears but it feels like it's locking in 2nd because it's locking at the exact same time it's up-shifting into 3rd. And it takes quite a bit of throttle opening to get it to release. That's why most people either put a kill switch or chip in them. Also, the lockup won't occur until the transmission reaches a certain minimum temperature that is determined by the temperature switch that is screwed into the valve body. Like I said before you can put a kill switch in or change the chip or use a pressure switch to control the lockup. |

I can see why you would want to put one in as the TH700R4's will often lug down to less than 40 mph before downshifting into 3rd. But with my 454" it's completely unnecessary because of the massive torque. I'm still looking for a vacuum operated switch to break my T/C connection so I can run my 3rd gear lockup. My extra 0-15 psi Hobbs pressure switch is still mounted but is disconnected until I find a suitable switch. Any ideas what I can use? I want it to break at about 5 Hg. |

I don t know of anything that would disengage at 5hg..brake control switches don t operate that low.. maybe try a google search for 12V adjustable vac switches.. somebody probably makes one
