The AIR system is a balanced one and your engine should actually run better with it in place. It would be a big job to remove it with no real benefit for a street car. Suggest just replacing the AIR pump. It is cheap and easy to do:

I agree with Slicktop as it's way more trouble than it's worth to remove everything. Rebuilt smog pumps are real cheap and will usually last 100,000 miles or more. Then down the road the next owner will likely thank you for keeping it original as he might be subject to smog tests in his area.

I disagree in it being a big job to remove. I removed all the air parts in a only a few hours. I didn't notice any difference in how it ran, but it did seriously cleanup the appearance under the hood. I also removed the innards of the smog pump itself and left it in place so that I didn't have to mess with fitting a different belt.

If your state smog tests then I would leave it be.

So you drive arround with a check engine light on all the time? Also, if you left the smog pump so that you would not have to change the drive belt system you did not accomplish the hardest part of removing the smog equipment, and did not remove the biggest piece of equipment, the pump. You really accomplished nothing........except to mess your car up. I would not recommend that to anyone.
