Default PCV catch can

pardon my ignorance but what is the purpose of a pcv catch can, I'm assuming that it is to keep oil droplets out of intake

yes and it does work
but
I also read about it costing HP which really didn't make any sense to me

its used on supercharged or turbocharged , or racing engines.. useless on a stock motor, that does not have high crankcase pressure.....there s a better way, by using the exhaust flow to evacuate the crankcase.. Ex2, I ve never heard that it costs power, any idea why?

On a stock motor the crankcase is vented through the catch can and into the intake after the throttle body and mass air flow sensor.

Unregulated air does cost power, but how much is the question....

Curious, I d like to know why.. I still believe that an exhaust evacuation system is far better method ..there are some dyno tests that show HP increases. tho it may not be emission friendly
