Hey guys,
I need a little help picking out a cam for my 77 vette. It's a 3970010 40 over block, Hyper pistons, Eagle rods, cast crank and has been balanced, 64cc iron heads/Z28 springs, shorty headers, Weiand Stealth intake, duel exhaust,Th350 tranny and from looking at the diff code it's 3.08 gears unless someone been in there. I'm looking for a cam that will go well with my combo and I would love for it to sound a little lumpy. Any advise is appreciated. |

One of the most popular cams for 350" Chevrolets is the Competition Cams 268H.

I was currently looking at the comp cams 270H or 280H but I am not really sure which cam is the best for my application, the 280H may be too much with my rear gearing.
Need more suggestions Please!!!! Chris.

Unless you change gears I would put a cam in that is similar to the L82 cam for that year. They are sometimes called rv cams. Comp cam help line will fix you up. I have a 79 with 10:1 compression, eagle crank, .030 over, balanced, a 284 grind comp cam and 3.70 gears, RHS aluminum heads, 1.6:1 comp roller rockers, and Hooker comp headers, etc, etc. I had to install a 3500 stall converter to wake up the bottom end with that cam. my engine is a dud until it sees 3,000 rpms and then----hang on!

comp cams thumper series are awesome. I would recomend going roller!!! The new oil is junk it will kill a flat tappet cam!!!If you do go flat tappet, make sure you use break in oil, not the additive!!!!!!!!!!! Joe Gibbs has the best break in oil and hot rod oil there is. Its worth the extra money now to go roller!!!!Its cheeper to do it once right than to do it twice.

A flat tappet cam will survive the new oils, but it MUST be broken in first with a break in oil. Then once properly broken in, it will survive. Be sure to use G.M.'s oil additive that is loaded with zinc for the entire break in period. If you're running higher-than-normal spring pressures, then use G.M.'s additive during the first 2 oil oil changes; rather than just the first.

The new oil( anything with an API rating) has detergents in it that makes dirt, carbon and unfortunately zinc and phos, into larger molecules so that it can be filtered out.Do not use standard oil with a flat tappet cam, You might get lucky with additives, but you would be way better off just using the right oil than doctoring up the wrong stuff thats designed to remove the stuff you just added. The good oil is only a couple of bucks more per oil change than the cheep stuff. You wouldnt run cheep stuff in your Corvette anyway would you?Just use oil designed for a flat tappet cam and dont take chances!!!It doesnt matter what brand, just use the right stuff.
