Haynes is good, I highly reccommend a shop manual. zip corvette.com has them thats where I bought mine.

Haynes has only one use on and that is in the toilet; NOT FOR READING EITHER.
![]() Only manuals worth having are the Factory Service Manuals (FSM ) Have full diagnostics and work throughs for all problems that the Haynes don't even mention. 2 book set Commonly for sale on eBay , or new new from Helms www.helminc.com

Why do you say that? I've found it very useful for background knowledge for simply taking components out or component location. I agree with you 100% its not very technical, thats what the shop manual is for.

The sort of guy into pulling and rebuilding engines knows most of that stuff or can work out how to unbolt something. Someone not that advanced has no interest in crank bearing clearances I bought one when I was young and didn't know any better. All it told me was "remove and replace with new"; no troubleshooting What is of more use to the " average " owner is how to at least diagnose engine problems ( especially engine elec / sensor ) and fix himself or know the shop is not ripping him off when he takes it in and they say he needs a $400 computer because a $25 sensor is bad. The Haynes does not have detailed diagnostics like this for fault finding http://www.batee.com/corvette/codes/index.htm

The truth is i use the Haynes manual more than the factory manuals since it is laid out in a more logical pattern making finding the info easier.
I admit that it is limited in trying to computer diagnostic stuff but can get you through about 95% of your repairs on these cars. I have a collection of about 6 different years worth of factory shop manuals along with the last YY parts catalog that was printed (i think 93 or 94). The factory manuals are actually harder for me to find things in the electrical diagrams than in the Haynes. Although the factory manual gives better diagnostic processes and indicates the component location in the car better. While the blow-up diagrams in the YY catalog are beyond approach for locating some parts and showing where and how they should be assembled most of the time. In the end your average home tinkerer doesn't need more than the Haynes manual for almost any job they should be attempting...If they need more then they should probably have a more experienced mechanic doing the job. I even have a small library of other types of shop manuals for GMs and Corvette, But find that my Haynes is the most used by about 10 fold. So exactly why do you say it is worthless? |
