88 Corvette pings like a bitch when up to temp...
Things I have done....changed ECM, O2 Sensor, EGR valve, EGR temp switch, knock sensor, electronic spark control module, and tons of trouble shooting, Checked all ground wires, cleaned and re grounded most of them, tried better gas, changed spark plug wires. Yes I have pulled the codes 32 and 43, still dies when try to set timing by un plugging the tan wire with black stripe like manual says. No carbon build up. This is a new crate motor replaced by previous owner. Car runs great when cold. Any other suggestions, have several previous posts on this????? Please someone give me a different answer.

You say you can't time it without it dying when you have the tan wire disconnected? I'm wondering if your outer ring on your vibration damper hasn't slipped. What you can do to check it is remove the #1 spark plug and stick a long skinny phillips screwdriver way into the cylinder. Then very carefully bar your engine over; bringing piston #1 up to the top. And when it reaches the top, the mark on your damper should line up with the pointer. If your damper has slipped, your engine might be running real retarded (HOT) and causing the pinging you hear. So I'd check the damper before you try anything else. If I recall, the keyway in the crankshaft is perfectly lined up with the #1 rod throw. So I'd suggest your getting under the car and seeing if that keyway is pointing upwards at an exact 45 degree angle when your damper indicates you're at TDC. Yes, you'll have to remove the retaining bolt and washer to be able to see the keyway in the damper's inner hub. But as you're having so much trouble, it is certainly worth checking. Dampers DO slip!
I just had another thought about the damper. There was a time in which the timing mark on the damper's outer ring was in another location (late 60's?). I'm wondering if your engine might have a wrong damper on it. Whatever is the case, the crankshaft's keyway should point up at an exact 45 degree angle when your engine is at TDC. Check it out and let us know what you find.
