Time Cop,
I recently took out the Bose System in my 89 convertible. I needed to replace my carpets and seats, so I stripped out the interior. If you have the Bose System, and want to replace it, you will have to replace the wire for your new system. The old wire will not work with the Bose system. Buy good wire. You will also need a chevy adapter harness. I brought one for less than $10 on Ebay.
The old stereo comes out easy. You will have to take the facing from the center part of the dash. The radio unplugs very easy from the harness. The main problem I had was replacing the speakers. The rear speakers were fairly easy, adapting the old speaker supports to work with the new speakers. The doors were really tough. I installed 6" speaker, replacing the old 4" speakers. I had much cutting to do to get the speakers installed. I used a old coat hanger to fish the wire through the door to the radio.
I soldered all connections. I installed a Sony Explode with Infinity speakers. 6" in the front and 9" oval in the back.
I should have taken photos of how I rigged up the speakers.
System sounds great!
