Hey guys, I am new here looking forward to getting to know the community, Listen I am looking at an oil cooler for my vette, the mods are as follows, corsa pace car exhaust, dual k&n intake, tuned, ported and polished mass air flow sensor, and throttle body by-pass kit. In time I will also be adding aftermarket throttle body, aftermarket air inlet hub between the throttle body and air flow sensor and the coupling, as well as better spark plug wires, and 160 degree thermostat, now is the oil cooler a good thing to have, I really dont care about the money I just want to know if its a good idea to get it and will it help my cars performance. All posts are thanked in advance!

Hi!
Welcome to Smokinvette!

It all depends on how you're using the car. The oil cooler won't necessarily make any more power, but if you're taking the car to the track every weekend, and running it hard, then the cooler will keep your oil temps down, which willl help your engine live a lot longer.

If you decide that you want one, a good quality oil cooler kit with everything you need will cost somewhere around 700-800.00

Now if all you do is cruise on the street, then the cooler isn't really needed, and you could spend that money on something that would help make some more power!

Hope this helps,
Ed

yeah I see what your saying, see I am going to probably be drag racing it maybe once a week against my friends and they have turbo's and superchargers in their mustangs and crap, I think that the oil cooler would help keep my temps down and that might help me get a small edge on them. The one I want is from west coast corvette its like 650.00 dollars I think.

I track(rr) my car weekly. A new separate oil cooler is going in Weds! I have a dewitts radiator. One addl point. Making sure your radiator shroud is sealed well so that air is channeled into your radiator is very imp.

As the post indicates above, the oil cooler option is really most imp for rr applications where the oil temps and therefore coolant temps get high after extended 20 min sessions.

My car is running a SC blower, which compounds heat issues.

Good luck.

I thought with the radiator and oil cooler combined isn't the most efficient because of hot cooland and hot oil passing through same deal???? Any ideas or thoughts?

no see the oil passes through the radiator not the coolant.

The two most often used after market radiators designed for vettes are Ron Davis and Dewitts. To quote Mr. Dewitts, who makes radiators with and without built in oil coolers:

1. For street combined is just fine.
2. For road racing, frequent HPDEs run with separate radiator and oil coolers.

Having tried both set ups myself, Mr. Dewitts is spot on.
