Okay, I need help from some of you Vette veterans. I can't figure out how to get it in competition mode. A guy I met at a car show told me how, push and hold button for five seconds and it should come up on the display. I did that, and the board cleared, nothing happen. A friend with another 98', but his is the Pace Car, was there and he tried it in his and nothing happened. I tried it in park, sitting still, foot on brake, in drive, sitting still, moving, I'm lost. Are some Vettes with out this option?

yes.
All C5's came with Traction Control as standard equipment. But not until 2001 was an additional stability system "Active Handling" standard.
In order to have the Competitive Driving mode, a C5 must have the Active Handling system (which was optional until model year 2001) .
pre 2001 C5's with AH required you to be still when trying to enter the mode (sometimes requiring the putton be pressed for a full 10 seconds). Then in 2001 the revamped AH system no longer forced one to stop first... to enter the Competitive Driving mode.
If your C5 is a 1998-2000, then you need to first determine if the car has the AH option. If it doesn't, then you won't have the Competitive Driving mode.

Active handling...... the switch next to the T/C button that determines whether I want to be in "Tour. Sport, Perf" mode....right? Well I see the switch for it. But to be honest, I don't notice a whole lot of difference when I change the mode. Maybe I need to remove my console and see what's up underneath.

I think you need option JL4 for it to work, check in your glovebox and see if JL4 is listed on the options sticker.

TC should have nothing to do with active handling.
It could be your not holding down the button long enough
If you push buttom once the DIC and a light on dash should show TC off.
If you hold button down and wait until your hear a beep and then DIC should say in comp mode.
You cannot do this I think if car is doing more then like 20 MPH
I have a 1999 and it does not have the active handling/shocks option and comp mode is functional

:iagree: I've got an 01 and 5 seconds definitely won't do it . More like 15 seconds.

you have a non-AH C5 and it allows the Comp Mode to be entered... and it displays "Competitive Driving" on the DIC???
Did it ever have a PCM swap?
That's what the competitive mode does; it disables TC, but allows AH to remain active. If your C5 doesn't have AH, then there's no need for a competetive mode... because you just turn off TC alltogether.
