Radioflyer97's How-To Post #8: Vent/Gille glow:

The Vent glow idea was originally started on spdkilz.com however I found a way to improve it.

Original modder's website:

(My car with version 1.1 using 1 12" cathode per side)

The biggest problem was that the cathode tube were easily visible from the side of the car as you moved towards the rear and I didn't care for that. In addition, the thodes always slightly whiter than the color they're supposed to be. In this case, it looked a little pink in person.

For those of you wondering about legality, Both Red and Amber are completely legal in all states qualifying as a side maker or turn signal (if you hook them up that way).

Where my version and the one on spdkilz differer is the type of light used, installation, and a little trick i learned about optics.

This is the panel you'll be dealing with (pic from spdkilz.com)

For optimum lighting, you want to paint the panel with either silver metallic, or a the metallic version of the color lights you'll be using. I'll show examples of both)

First clean the entire panel with windex, then rubbing alcohol. The prime with a dark primer (grey works well) Once the primer's dry, 2-3 coats of paint will do it.

I used waterproof LED strips from Oznium.com They're 9.5" version are perfect for this application and include mounting tape that works well in this location.

Once the paint is dry, mount the LED strip on the extreme rear edge
of the panel with the LEDs facing forward. This will keep the strip itself out of view from all angles once mounted, but allow the projected light to reflect of the panel. Since these LEDs are highly directional little light is wasted.

Wiring: You have 5 basic choices on how to wire them.
1) manual switch inside the car (my setup)
2) tap into foglights
3) tap into running lights
4) tap into turn signals (big pain in the butt...however not impossible)
5) tap into headlights.

The finished product (my car)
