1989 vette
Underneath top of glass hatchback has 2 star shaped bolts that I assume has to be taken out to get to the brake light bulbs. Is this correct and does anyone know the size of star wrench I need. The hard top star wrench is to big. Also, the red lense cover, for the bulbs, has a small slot (about the size for a flat screwdriver to fit in) located on the bottom in the middle of lense. I tried going this route but was afraid of breaking red plastic cover. Just wondering if slot is for getting to bulbs this way. Any help is greatly appreciated!

There are two ways to get to the bulbs. Many suggest removing the license plate and reaching in with your arm. Some say it is easier to lie on the ground and reach up to twist the socket.

If you are talking about the third brake light on top of the car then you need to remove those two star screws first. Not sure what size they are. (Use a rachet for this) Then when you have removed those screws pull up that third brake light carefully. You will see that when you lift it up there is a cable attached. Underneath the red cover you will see two more phillip head screws. Remove those screws. Separate the red plastic lens cover from the aluminum cover. Might be a little tight but it will come apart. Once you have separated these two you will see four bulbs. These are high perfomance halogen bulbs. These bulbs just pull out. Pull the burned out bulbs slowly. You can buy these bulbs at any autoparts store (I believe sylvania bulb 891 is still around for $7-$10 each bulb. They are expensive.) Make sure that when you install the new bulbs you do not touch the bulb with your fingers. This will short curcuit the bulb. You need to use a piece of cloth or napkin to install these bulbs. Once installed put it back together and you are done.

Good Luck!
