I have just purchased a 2000 vette and have experienced a problem # 1 --every now and then the car won't run and the display on the dash tells me to take out key and wait 10 seconds - the car will then start this is very anowing - am I doing something wrong to cause this problem? Can I disarm this? What has to be done to keep this from happining?
#2 -- The bacground light in the display window where the outside temp and heater display is very dim and I cannot get it to get brighten up is this a fuse or a internal lamp what do you suggest to correct this problem or problems ?

I hope that one of the tuners jumps on this one, I honestly have no clue, it sounds like an electrical problem to me. Good luck!

It's possible that the resistor pellet on your key is a little fouled up, try and clean it really well first.

Try and find out if your car had the column lock recall performed on it, if so remove the K-Harness that they installed under the recall. it's under the driver's knee bolster. Then get an aftermarket Column lock by-pass kit.

If it wasn't done, get an aftermarket Column lock by-pass kit.

For your dim display, you have cold solder joints on the 241 resistors on the HVAC power board. You can re-solder them or if you want I can do it for you... PM me directly if that's what you want to do.

This may be a weak or bad battery, this is normal problem if so as not enough voltage or bad cell in battery cannot handle the load for startup.
As to dim screen, again could be sign of weak battery or common is the motherboard of control has bad solder connection and using a soldering iron touch up all solder connections.

As to column lock, best path is as I do when tuning the PCM I totally turn off the CL and also if GM did the recall and set it that if CL fails it prevent car from going faster then 2 MPH. I also turn that off.

In many cases as mentioned it is bad battery, maybe loose or dirty battery post.
Best is to use a battery tender as these cars draws current even when car is off as the memory functions in car require voltage 24/7.
A battery can show good voltage but weak cell cannot handle current load so have battery load tested.

Your Column Lock is either not unlocking the column, or if the recall has been done, the motor is not retracting the pin quickly enough and signalling the ECM that all is OK to go. Either way, you should purchase and install a Column Lock Bypass before you have to have it towed to the dealer and spend some big bucks to fix. There are several vendors that sell a CLB for around $50.00, install is simple.
