hey everyone! So im looking at a used 99 automatic vette that has 96000 miles. i want to rebuild the motor and read an article about the STS remote-mounted turbocharger and was wondering what kind of work i would need to do this car in order to have it run properly. I'd hate to have put that kind of money into it and screw it up. thanks for the info :)

Your stock drivetrain components can generally handle about 450 RWHP. I'd say you're safe with the STS Turbos, assuming they are installed correctly and the PCM/engine is properly tuned of course...

I thought a TT system puts out more than that??

It can, it's all a matter of how much boost you dial up.

Well the weak spots will be your clutch, drive shaft bushings and output shafts. You'll want to look at bigger wheel/tires and brakes too... Someone with more smarts then me hopefully will step in with a more detailed list for you!

do you think it would be better to rebuild the engine or swap it with a already built engine?

If you have it within your budget to rebuild or replace the engine then why not just get it done for piece of mind. I mean yes these engines are solid but when you're talking about pumping extra HP into anything with fairly good mileage on it you never know. With 96K it may be worth it. My car was in the 126K range when I had my work done (H/C ++), I decided on not only the engine but on a new tranny, stall converter and gears (2.73-->3.42).

In the end it's up to you, suggestion may be to find a good shop who knows what they're doing and have them take a look at the car. See if they see any weaknesses in your stock set up which may become a problem with the added stress of additional HP. Good luck.

Yea i believe replacing it wont be a problem. But i have a new issue and thats with my current car. I have an 06 ss/sc cobalt that I want to sell just so i wont be upside down on a trade...If I sold it then my payment would be nothing...

One quick thing you may want to check out though, I bought my car at a government auction for $7500 bucks in 2006. It was a drug repo from MD. If you can take a look around auction sites and see what you can find. That way if you're able to pay cash for the car, you save some money which you can pump into building it up and possibly keep your Cobalt as a DD. This is my Cardomain page just so you see I didn't buy a junker:

Just a suggestion.

Believe it or not I did a google search for auctions and government auctions in the area. I found that auction site and took a look at what they were putting up for bids. I went and checked it out and decided to bid on it. Most of the people there were dealer reps and they were mainly interested in other types of vehicles.

Thanks for the compliment on the car, I love that thing.

I'm in the Army so the site if I remember correctly was a government auction site. I do not remember paying a fee.
