: how much power can a 346 handle?!

The reason I ask this is that I like to roam the youtube and look at vette videos and I came across a vette by A&A Corvettes. Obviously a C5 and here are the #"s,
vortech s trim, 9.4lbs afr 205 with 8019 springs comp 220/228 567/571 114lsa, ported fast 90 with 85mm maf, ecs alky, kooks lt’s and pace catbacks 668rwhp 592rwtq?? The video did'nt say anything about a forged bottom end. This seems quite high IMO. Maybe it's just me, any opinions on this one? I had a buddy that put a TT on his LS2 and put down 600rwhp at 9.5lbs of boost, it ended up blowing the #7 pistons top off!! What is the deal on this 346?

I've got a stock block and heads 02 Z06 LS6 with the Magnuson supercharger at about 7.5-8 pounds of boost, making 556 HP and 566 TQ, I've also been told that I should be able to go to about 10 pounds boost if I wanted and still be safe.

I've heard similiar things to what you have heard, I think that 650ish is probably about the max before forgeing is neccessary, from what I know of it.

A&A is one of the top tuners around.

As for how far you can push an LS1 block:

1. If you plan to go much past 8 lbs of boost (approx 500-550 rwhp) you will need to forge the bottom.

2. If you are willing to do forge the bottom you can run upto 16 lbs of boost and get rwhp past 750. You will need an addl fuel system to support that (not a boost a pump).

3. If you decide to go the forged route I would consider a stroker crank to increase the cubes of the engine. I would also count on installing meth injection as a protective measure and perhaps some additional cooling upgrades (Ron Davis radiator with a separate exterior oil cooler).

Good luck.

Even with the posts made I still don't see where A&A was able to get almost 670 at the wheels on a stock bottom 346!?!? I understand that there are great tuners all over the place but it still is a stock bottom end. Maybe they just forgot to mention that it was forged?

I agree. I don't think it's possible to get that type of rwhp "safely" out of a stock bottom.

Well, we have a stock bottom ended 03 Z06 daily driver with 9 PSI max boost that makes 640 RWTQ and 660 RWHP with an APS TT setup so it can be done. However, 9 PSI is REALLY pushing the bottom end.

Fortunately since he has a boost controller he runs on the 7 PSI wastegate spring setting most of the time.

We also tried our prototype 3" exhaust on this car and that added 15 HP to the top end and picked up the bottom end around 30 Ft lbs as well. And that was on a lower 8 PSI boost setting because we forgot to change it on the dyno! :banghead:

Hats off to you. Very interesting approach to getting some addl hp out of stock bottom.

In terms of controlling the boost level any additional thoughts on when your customer turns it up. Are hot days more of a risk? Not as familiar with TT, is meth inj worth doing?

:iagree: I was always wondering if the Meth kits really did anything that was noticeable. Bill

The LS-Family of engines is very impressive in terms of the power it can handle. Part of the key to making a lot of power for a long time is a safe tune.

We had an F-Body with twin turbos on a stock bottom end that made 640 RWHP /640 RWTQ and it's still running strong after 6 years and 40,000+ Miles.

We also have a customer with an 2007 Corvette Convertible, stock bottom end LS2 with a stock A6 Automatic Transmission and the following mods:
Livernois Motorsports Stage 3 CNC Heads
Livernois Motorsports Stage 1 Camshaft
Kooks Longtube Headers and X-Pipe w/ Cats (through the factory catback)
ProCharger D1SC @ 8-9 lbs.
Livernois Motorsports Custom Tune

This car isn't babied. He bought the car to street race it and that's all they do with it. We told him when we built it that with that much power and the way he drives it, it will break. He was aware of this and said if it broke, he would have us build a forged stroker engine. It now has 13,000 very hard miles and no engine related issues. It did however break one transmission. It's been 10's @ 138mph.

Quite impressive indeed! I would definetely agree that a good tuner can make some amazing things happen!

Stock blocks can be pushed hard if they are tuned well, and I'm sure Andy at A&A has that covered.

We have two customers running 9's on a stock bottom end/heads, one of which has ran 9.82 at 138.8, the alky is imperative to being able to do this so it is well worth it IMO. That car has also been running times near that for three seasons now with over 250 passes on it, and is driven to and from the track and work.

feel free to contact us if anyone has any other questions on our meth injection kit. 609-752-0321
