I own a 1982 Corvette. When the car is cold the engine starts right up. When the engine is warm there is absolutely no response from engine or starter. Completely dead! When car cools off after an hour or so it will start right back up. Please help....

Sounds like when the starter gets hot(from being next to the header), the solenoid is expanding and can get stuck because of excess dust in there or something like that. Assuming it's not some other electrical problem, tap on the solenoid with a hammer to try loosening it up. If thet doesn't work, try a new one. I hope that helps..

First thing I did was replace starter. Problem got better but still every once in a while I still have same problem. Not as much as before I replaced starter however. Thanks!

i realize this is a no brainer, but when did you clean your battery terminals last?

I had same probs with my '74 350,
Hi Torque starter and heat shield fixed it.
Not really sure the heat shield is needed
but it cant hurt.
Funny thing is,I've had heaps of Fords (6 Cylinder)
and their starters are way closer the the exhaust
(than my Vettes) and I never had this kind problem
(heat soak) with any of them.
CHEERS & GOOD LUCK

most of it is because the selonoids(spelling?) are away from the exhaust

My Dads 62 vette has the same problem. I have been going to change out the starter on it, but haven't got around to it yet.

Hello
I answered this same question for some one yesterday but one seams to believe me. Just to the passengers side of your distribuitor there is i main plug in the wiring harness with 6 or 8 wires in it going down to the starter. The purple wire in this harness gos to the starter solenoid. This harness plug gets hot and the connection going to the starter solenoid wire is lost. If you just bypass this connection your problem is fixed. It takes 5 minutes.

I had this same problem. I bought a heat shield for my starter at Auto Zone ($12.95) and it cured the problem for good

Ditto Stoney,
My 1967 Chevell/Malibu did the same thing. I put in a heat shield. It also wouldn't run in the rain because water always got in the distibuter. I fabricated a cover for that.
