New to the forum: Hello all,
I have a 2000 C5 coupe, 59K, just experienced a harmonic type humming noise emitting from the rear end that began after a burnout. Gets louder (more noticeable) from 50-70mph. Anyone have an idea what could be causing this noise?
thanks.

An out of round rear tire, get your tires road force balanced to find the culprit!

Thanks for that, but I already tried swapping all the tires with a complete new set. Wasn't it. I'm trying to narrow it down before sending it in to a mechanic for him to discovery by process of elimination $$$. I'm thinking it might be a bearing in the differential...

Yeah that would be next on the hit list. The drivetrain otherwise sounds and feels fine???? IE Torque Tube bushings????

Possibly the rear end. Wonder if something shifted in the rear end after the burnout.

Drivetrain feels fine, no shimmy or vibration. It might be me but since the problem, I haven't driven it but a couple of times, feels like it's dragging a little? I wouldn't know, other than the part name, what it would feel like if the Torque Tube Bushing is bad. Looking at the cost for parts replacement vs re-build diff, a couple more C-notes and I have new differential... that's if that's the problem.

Could be... I can't think of anything that can shift? any suggestions?

If it gets louder with speed regardless of gear ratio chosen it's the rear end. Get it checked out!

If it's RPM related then I would look at the torque tube etc.
