Has anyone out there tried to replace burnt out LCD panels in their dash cluster? I have heard it is not that difficult but is rather tedious. I’m looking to find someone who has done this before so I can get some tips. I have 1 LCD that just burned out and it is a rather important one, it’s the speedometer LCD. I can’t tell when I’m speeding anymore. Not good when you are near a cop on the highway alone.
It doesn’t look that difficult and I’d worry about not aligning it correctly on re assembly.
Once again this is more for anyone who HAS done this before rather than someone who read a manual that says it should only be done by a trained professional.

You know what, it might be cheaper and heck of lot less time consuming just to pick up a new/used one from ebay? That is a pain in a butt job.

That is why I'm asking the question. LOL I have been looking on e-bay and it may be cheeper than anyplace else but I just want to check all options. Untill I fix or replace it I have a GPS to figure out my speed and it is very accurate.

I have had my cluster apart in hopes that what I saw as a dim portion of the cluster was actually the a burnt out light bulb and NOT the LED. Not to be!The assembly is put together in three layers, stack-ed on top of one another. Replacing a light bulb would have been so easy, once separating all the circuit boards. I dusted off all my light bulbs and checked them each with low voltage to be sure they all were either good or burnt out. Upon re-assembly I found that light bulbs were not my problem, but that it is in fact the LED of the cluster.
I'm in the same situation that you're in, after all that work. But at least now I know where I stand.
I have noticed lately that not only is the right side of my cluster a bit dim and hard to read in the daylight, but also my RANGE for gas distance appears to be inaccurate as well. I am also having fluctuating variations on my temp gauge. Early in the morning, before 6AM, immediately after the car is started, the temp gauge reads 299 degrees with the red bar showing. The car isn't even warmed up yet after less than a minute of running time. The radiator is full to the cap. I spent $25 to replace the temp sensor, but still no luck. When driving it, out of the clear blue, the temp drops down to a respectible 205 degrees. With all these inaccuracies I feel it's time to replace the cluster. I've been looking on ebay as well for another cluster. That has its share of drawbacks too.......buyer beware! Many electrical parts work fine for the seller, but mysteriously seem to fail for the buyer, once the sale is over. Hmmmm!
My '85 was doing the same thing. I went several places to begin inquiring. I found a guy in Bloomington Indiana, Gene Taber. He sent me shipping box, material to pack dash cluster in and rebuilt the entire cluster for apprx. $350. You can email him at genetaber@aol.com and I'm sure he can help you.

Yea the e-bay thing is definatly buyer beware, I have seen 2 that the sellers say "works great" but I can tell from the pictures that the LED's are burned out. You can tell that by looking at it turned off. If you can see any numbers etc it's burned out. Too bad to cause nobody is bidding on them and they are about to go for a steal. Too bad they are burned out. LOL
As for the guy who rebuilds them that is a bit high. I have seen some rebuild services that are a little cheeper like arouns 245-300 but it is in the general ball park. I also fount that when the cluster goes bad beware of your battery. Thank God I have a kill switch hidden in my car. (For theft prevention) If it were not for that I]d need to start her every day.
