: How many people run thier Vettes without RUNFLATS
Black Label Vette 04-14-2008, 03:25 PM I was wondering how many people run their Vettes without
RUNFLATS on them. I always
wondered if the runflats are
worth the extra money and
the loss of ride quality. I have
towing included in my insurance
policy, so I don't see the big
deal!! Maybe I don't see the
advantage unless it has
something to do with the
speed rating on the tire???????
Whats your thoughts???????

Lethal Tendencies 04-14-2008, 04:33 PM No run flats here. I have AAA.

tstar 04-14-2008, 09:53 PM I plan on getting REAL tires soon, I hate these runflats! They don't even leave a decent patch on the road after burning a gallon of gas in one spot!
Black Label Vette 04-15-2008, 07:00 AM I would think that a tire
with a sidewall that isn't so stiff would ride alot nicer.
I've had runflats on both of my Vettes so I don't have
any idea how much different the ride is!!!!
TCR-02 04-15-2008, 07:36 AM I run michelins. The ones Im using have a nice rim saver. Anytime Ive had a tire go on a low sidewall tire it just cuts the tire all the way around with the rim anyways. Im still not feeling waiting an hour or more for a tow truck though if I get a flat. Then depend on them to get that car up without scratching it, etc. I probably will buy a set of runflats again. They handle and wear fine.
Performinnorman 04-15-2008, 08:25 AM I have the OEM tires on my C5Z. I like the added traction it brings over the run flats but I like the C6Z run flats as I never worry about getting a flat. Kind of a catch 22.
Ziggy 04-16-2008, 01:41 PM I personally like the Pilots.
jagged 04-16-2008, 04:04 PM I replaced my runflats with a set of Kumho ECSTA SPt's. I like
the ride, handling and quiet ride. Carry a can of Flat tire fix and
a small air compressor that runs off of battery.
TCR-02 04-16-2008, 06:47 PM The instant the tire goes flat the rim cuts right around the sidewall anyways so that pump wont do a lot for it.
Black Label Vette 04-16-2008, 07:35 PM So I guess what you're saying( TCR-02 )
is not only will you be replacing a tire but probably a rim too!!!
I think I will stick to the run flats!!!!!

TCR-02 04-16-2008, 09:53 PM Well, most really low profile tires have rim savers on them now. But since theres not much tire there you will only notice a slight vibration. Ive never lost a rim but I pull over immediately when I get that. Last one I would say I was off the road and stopped no longer than 15 seconds after it went and it cuts a nice ring through the sidewall in that time. The rim still sat on the extra rubber(rim saver)so that part was fine. This was on a 4000lb S class though. I dont see a 3100lb car being much different though. Still, I have what I consider costly wheels. Id rather not take the chance. I guess in the end if you are willing to wait on a tow truck then run what you want. Too me its foolish to wait on a tow truck to change my tire if I have any sayso about it.
dusky 04-20-2008, 07:58 AM I run Vredestein Sessanta's run great & have Geico road service.

Rick@Livernois 04-28-2008, 06:29 PM I had Bridgestone Potenza Pole Positions (Non Runflats) on my C5 and was amazed at how much less road noise there was and how much nicer it rode.

Red2000 04-29-2008, 02:35 PM Once these Good Years are done, I'm moving to the Michelin Pilot Sports. I have towing included in my insurance also. :patriot:
02RonZ06 04-30-2008, 06:57 AM No more run flats here for me, now it's bridgestone Pilot pole positions, thried the BFG KDW's and those were nice, also had the Firstone wide ovals, they were ok too.
gcoff5 05-05-2008, 08:57 PM On my 3rd set and considering changing!! They cost to damn much
corvette430hp 05-25-2008, 06:25 AM Stopped running them a long time ago. carry a can of fix it flat and a plyg kit, or buy the zo6 tire kit ZO6 corvettes dont come with run flats just the repair kit. Run flats also have about 15 more lbs per tire due to all the built up side walls. also alot of tire places charge more to mount and balance beacue it takes longer to break them down and mount them due to the extra sidewall strength. save money and time and dont drive thru a construction zone were you might be more prone to get a flat.
dusky 05-26-2008, 05:18 AM No run flats here, go with GEICO.
XPOSE C5 05-26-2008, 10:07 AM :driving: :driving:

jgillen1 10-23-2008, 09:16 AM we are running Kumho ECSTA's and carry a 12volt compressor and a flat repair kit. if we ever have a flat w'ere hoping that will get us to a repair facility without being towed. also, just received the red anodized jacking pucks from Elite Engineering via Fedex today. great looking:burnout: item!!!
BAD-C5 10-23-2008, 09:36 AM No run flats for me just bought the Toyo's and like them nice ride quiet if i get a flat i will call CAA....
dusky 10-24-2008, 07:13 AM None here, road service with Geico.
I had Kumho's for less then one year, tread life was terrible, 10K only.
Went to Michelin ZP's and the rim saver is nice, ride is great and tread life so far very good.
econovette 10-24-2008, 10:53 AM ride is significantly better. car doesn't "track" seams in the road surface. quieter, although noise is still a problem, depending on the tire brand and how the particular car is insulated. i have heard that 2002+ are better insulated.
Eddie 70 10-24-2008, 01:32 PM No run flats for me.
durde57240 10-25-2008, 06:12 AM My car runs 100% softer with the non roadflats love it and ive never had aflat tire. btw if you want, you could put an rear wheel spare in the back of the carand you can replace any tire thats flat:wazzzup: :yay:
Mike Mercury 10-25-2008, 06:35 AM Sadly, many people equate all EMT... aka "run-flat" ... tires to the factory Goodyears that GM selected for the C5.
I agree that this specific 200 mile run-flat design is craapy. But there's a whole hoard of non-Goodyear run-flats that ride better, smoother, and quieter. So one doesn't hafta ditch run-flats all-together to gain a ride improvement.
For the C6, GM lowered the spec for run-flats, from the C5's 200 miles with zero air pressure - to 100 mile duty with Z.A.P.. This change allowed for a less stiff sidewall. The thinner sidewall doesn't conduct noise and vibration as well as the thicker sidewall counterpart.
As far as I've been able to investigate, only Goodyear continues to make EMT tires (for the C5) that conform to the 200 mile Z.A.P. spec.
SO. this means that any non-Goodyear EMT tire is bound to give improved & quieter ride over the OEM tires.
Granted, that serious autocross and dragracers (that frequent the track regularly) would ditch EMT's in a heartbeat; and that makes sense for their specific application.
jimmymack 10-27-2008, 09:11 AM Nitto extreme 555.Nice tire to.
jimmymack 10-31-2008, 10:47 AM Nitto extreme 555.Nice tire to.

albell562 10-05-2009, 02:56 PM Is there some type of spare tire someone would bring on long trips
njlou 10-05-2009, 04:37 PM WOW!! they could never show that over here.
It is cruel .....but funny. Very clever.
I still have the GY runflats and they are very noisy. I think non runflats with original pressure sensors may be a good substitute. You could tell if the tire was softening. -
njlou 10-05-2009, 04:40 PM Is there some type of spare tire someone would bring on long trips
I saw a spare kit that fits in the C5 under the roof storage area. I think you can get the roof in there too. It consists of a GM temp spare and a truck jack etc. I think it was on one of the other forums or on Ebay.
CorvetteDon 10-05-2009, 08:38 PM Still runnin on the stock run flats.
neokorros 10-06-2009, 04:18 AM first mod i did was get rid of the runflats. never looked back :)
