Hey guys,

So my mechanic has been patching up oil leaks all over my baby and we're at a good place now but the last one we're trying to trace is coming out of the intake manifold. He tried replacing the intake manifold (cost about $620 with labor)

It seems that it is spilling out when I make a turn then hit the gas because I can smell oil burning and a plume of smoke in the rearview as I drive away. I don't know much about mechanics but assume somethings getting loose?

Anyways, have you experienced this or have an idea of what can be causing? I'll be taking her back to the shop Monday.

I would appreciate any help. Otherwise, this will likely happen:

since its worse on acceleration, I would guess that its the rear manifold gasket..probably moved out of position when manifold was installed. have you replaced the PCV valve and verified its working? If its not, you will never stop the leaks.. and be sure thats where the oil is coming from, and not the back of the valve covers [ notorious for leaking on accceleration]

Had the same problem on the front and rear gaskets(mostly the rear it makes smoke) when you accelerate the oil pressure goes up so it squirts out and its mostly when you turn because of pull
also make sure the gaskets are the right ones theirs two kinds the ones with a grove and the ones with nipples
(The PVC valve cost about 2 bucks so just replace it)

ok thanks, I'll make this recommendation to my mechanic...Although this problem has happened before the intake manifold replacement.

was your engine running hot for a long period of time(heat might make the gaskets crack plus they go on pretty tight since water might leak)

the manifold itself does not circulate oil, it only contains the oil in the lifter valley by simply covering it..but the front and rear gaskets must seal properly..replacing the old manifold would not have accomplished anything.. its possible that your old manifold gasket was doing the same thing. And , again , I recomend checking the back of the valve covers, and the PCV valve

just out of curiosity , have you done a leakdown check ?
how many miles are on the engine ?

maybe too much crankcase pressure is pushing out gaskets and causing leaks

good point EX, thats another possibility if the motor has a lot of miles.. that smoke may be coming from the exhaust as well

Ray, sounds like you need a new mechanic that knows Chevy's and Corvette's. I know a good one on the NE side of Atlanta if you are interested.

Yeah, I found the problem the same day and fixed it and am no pro ( just playing the guessing game and learning from the Internet)

It's very possible the front transmission seal is leaking and oil is accumulating in the dust cover. Then when you make a turn the oil is draining out of the hole in the bottom and is getting on your exhaust pipe. Look for signs of burned oil on your exhaust pipes and also look for signs of oil coming out of the dust cover.

we are all assuming the leak is on top because of manifold change..but Toobroke may be onto something, it might be the rear main seal leaking as well...get under the car and see if you have oil on the dust cover or bellhousing if manual and trans.... if so, what color?

Oh my god. I'm an idiot.

So I went to the shop today, took a look around with the mechanic and the intake looked totally dry. I just glanced at it a few days ago and the small gleam of metal inside there must've made me think the leak was back.

Anyways, no more questioning, no more leak and I think it won't be coming back.

Btw, the plume of smoke from a turn is likely from some quite a bit of oil droplets on the hoses--I'll get the engine cleaned out and that should handle it.

Sorry for the bad call guys...I'll let you know if it comes back.
