The more you post about what you've been experiencing, the more it sounds like what happened to me with my starter. Mine never completely went out. It would start and run great for a week, then have starting issues like we have been talking about. Then it would go away, but start acting up later. I finally got fed up with the unpredictability (also getting stranded ) and finally took a day off work and troubleshot every component and finally isolated it to the solenoid. I don't know if this is your problem, but it seems strangely familiar. Good luck!!!

Always best to check before you start throwing new parts at it.

I had to replace my starter last week. Would turn the key but only the lights would come on, no click and no noise. I pushed it back a bit to turn the flywheel and it started. Drove to the dealer and wouldnt start again. On the lift they noticed the selenoid was fried. They say a common problem with c5 starters as are close to the exhaust manifold and dont take heat well. I them replace it with a GM lifetime warrently one at a cost of $725 but now wont have to worry about changing the starter again
