Is there suppose to be a stop/notch between drive and neutral ?? When I manually go from 1st gear to 2nd and then to drive, I have a tendency to slip it into neutral. I'm not using the shift button on the shifter.

there is not a lock out, the button is only for park...I once had my 3 year old , at the time, kick the shifter in my 71 454 while going down the hiway.. it went all the way to reverse!..It stopped the rear tires and I SKIDDED OFF THE ROAD SIDEWAYS.I was amazed that it did no damage to the trans..

Ya. I have checked several other vehicles with GM autos and it appears that non of them have drive to neutral detents. I think it would be a good idea though.

When I recently rigged up a back-up light switch on my '71 that was actuated by my shift lever I found the shift lever had a lock-out in the DRIVE position that prevented going into 2nd gear. But the factory put in a shorter spring and washer that prevented that lock-out from working. I removed the washer and put a 1/4" longer spring in and now when I pull my shift lever back into the DRIVE position it stops. I now have to depress the button to shift into 2nd.

No, there's no notch between DRIVE and NEUTRAL. Or between DRIVE and REVERSE for that matter as it's often advantageous to quickly shift from DRIVE to REVERSE and back into DRIVE to get out of deep sand or mud.

but its not a good thing when it shifts from drive to reverse at 60mph!

Better than shifting into reverse at 120 mph.
