: dual snorkel air cleaner/fresh air hood?
1978 C3 12-18-2010, 02:58 AM i think it was some early-mid 70's small block cars that had both the dual snorkel air cleaner base and the open top that mated to the hood. what hood was it and can i fit an aftermarket hood to my 78' to work with that system?

My '73 had that originally. I think the L-82 and L-48 hoods were the same in that year. They had a air dam flapper that opened when the accelerator pedal was fully depressed to let the cool air in from the hood. Don't know about the '78.
fishslayer143@yahoo.com 12-18-2010, 07:35 AM if you just want to get cold outside air to motor, you might consider something like this http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/728/10002/-1 , much less expensive than what you are talking about...if your motor is stock, don t expect giant leap in horsepower by feeding cold air..an engine will gain about 1% power for every 10* below 80* F. so if you only have 185HP, thats only 1.85HP for every 10* you lower air temp going in ...the more important advantage of CAI is to prevent HP loss in summer where underhood temps climb high and cause HP to drop off.
1978 C3 12-18-2010, 04:26 PM living here in the midlands of south carolina (columbia) it regularly goes well over 100 during the summer months, not looking for an HP gain as much as i'm trying to keep the engine running as cool as possible. gets hot and humid enough here that it gets too damn hot to get on the motorcycle, no wai i'm suiting up in all the protective gear when it's 98 thats for sure :thumbsup3: i'll give that spectre kit a good look, way cheaper than going with a factory setup thats for sure.
fishslayer143@yahoo.com 12-18-2010, 05:11 PM worth a look.. I lived in Beech Island/Aiken area of S.C. for about 5yrs. it does get hot .. if its the engine temp you are trying to bring down, I would suggest changing to a severe duty clutch for the cooling fan..about $60.. pulls more air thru the radiator. easy to install...or what I run, a 7 blade Stainless Steel Flex fan, even at 115 degrees heat index here in south Louisiana, engine never goes over 185-190* with A/C on. and I m with you on the bike in summer, mine stays parked too.anyway, welcome to the C3.

Fish, I got to thinking about heat indexes and I don't think they affect anything but warm blooded creatures. Because only warm blooded creatures sweat and are therefore affected by the humidity.
fishslayer143@yahoo.com 12-19-2010, 04:55 AM there you go thinking again, Steve..you may be right, but the mercury is still over 100* without the index. and, as you know, my 81 is BLACK, you can t even touch the paint if its in the sun.add the heat from a/c condenser, and You ve got to move some air to keep the engine temp down in summer.
1978 C3 12-19-2010, 01:34 PM engine temp is covered, an aluminum BE COOL with dual electric fans is going on in the next few days. just trying to prevent detonation without having to take timing out of it since the cooler the intake air is the happier the motor is.

Fish, being a retired engineer I'm always thinking about weird stuff. Like the basic design flaw in both Philips and straight blade screwdrivers. The harder you turn them the more they want to "cam out" of engagement with the screw's head. The best setup of all is the 6-side Torx Bit as the bit doesn't have any taper to it (although a 4-side would be better). And Allen head bits are almost as bad as screwdrivers as they have 6 sides (the more sides they have the "rounder" they are and the easier they strip out). If they had only 4 sides they would rarely strip out. And I also ponder the birth/death ratio and realize we are grossly overpopulated and steadily getting worse. And I wonder why men have more facial hair than women (I said "more" because I have known women who had to shave every day). And I also ponder the differences in nationalities of people in this world and wonder if their diets and climate conditions are solely responsible for their very different appearances. And I wonder why our uh lower "vents" are located where they are. With the satellite imagery we have today I doubt we will ever have a third world war because we can keep tabs on what's being constructed everywhere in this world. And with the smart bombs and radar evading aircraft we now have we can easily (and cheaply) destroy any new construction. And the V8 engine? It's the most popular design of all because it has a crankshaft at the bottom and it has 8 cylinders to give a smooth (enough) delivery of power to the transmission. A V12 is smoother for sure but the length of it's crankshaft invites early failure. I predict we will see automatic transmissions with up to 10 speeds in the future as their developement progresses. And I also predict we will see future Corvette engines with dual overhead cams and twin turbochargers.
fishslayer143@yahoo.com 12-20-2010, 05:42 AM Steve, old buddy, I think you have too much free time on your hands. LOL .

if you still have the stock motor, your compression is not high enough for detonation to be a problem in hot weather, unless you are using 87 octane fuel. the be-cool set-up is nice and effective .
1978 C3 12-20-2010, 05:28 PM i am REALLY looking at doing heads with larger valves and smaller chambers (the l48 head has a 76cc chamber) a hydraulic roller cam and the professional products ez-tune injection system. i want more power but i'm trying to me smart about it and keep drivability and mileage decent, it's why a built 200r4 out of a Monte SS is going into the car as well, it;s the same length as the th350 so my carbon fiber driveshaft can stay, all i need to change is the crossmember and that i'll fab and build myself if i can get my plasma cutter back soon enough. like i've said before, this is going to be my daily driver, i'll use the motorcycles for VERY short hops in town and decent weather (cant ride much since breaking my neck and back) those clip-ons and rearsets on the honda and suzuki are a killer.
fishslayer143@yahoo.com 12-20-2010, 06:57 PM if you use heads with smaller chambers, it will increase compression slightly, a good cam, especially roller, and good intake too ,will bring up the horsepower to a repectable level..are you looking at the Powerjection III or the Fast EFI? both are little expensive compared to a good carb, but are good systems. the self tuning makes it easy...you ll love the OD on the trans.. good luck on you project.
1978 C3 12-20-2010, 07:15 PM this one here...........self tuning, supports more power than i'll ever need. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PFS-70028/
it already has a holley street dominator intake already, but it's a real pig with the 750 holley the PO put on it. i've tuned it with a wide band A/F meter but it's still too much carb for what is a basically stock motor. with the crosshatch still showing on the cylinder walls and the bearings plastigauging within spec for NEW, i'm not going to tough the bottom end. then i checked bearings i put in arp studs and a new rear seal and oil pump so heads with 1.94 intake and 1.60 exhaust and 64cc chambers, some mild bowl work and port cleanup without hogging them out and a split profile hydraulic roller, it ought to be a nice fun ride still getting good enough mileage (as long as i keep my foot out of it) for a daily driver. going with the smaller intake valve to keep a higher intake charge velocity, it's really the exhaust side of a small block head that needs help.
fishslayer143@yahoo.com 12-20-2010, 07:27 PM I ve heard good things about it..its good up to about 550HP. you re right, the 750 cfm carb is too much for stock motor. I run a Quickfuel SS750DP on my stroker.its probably the best carb I ve every used in 40 years
