I've just bought a 82 here in Malaysia. I'm told it only one of four in Malaysia. I've redone the suspension, all bushings, ball joints, shocks, springs, etc. Replaced the old calipers. Now I need to rebuild the trans, but I don't know what to call the various parts I need. Does anyone know where I can get a diagram/schematic of the TH400. And, yes, I have noted lots of recommendations for a 700r4. Let me see how much the parts cost, then I'll decide.

Thanks alot. Love the forum.

As Malaysia has cars it certainly has transmission parts supply houses. I would recommend you rebuild your 700R4 because the TH400 is shorter and uses a rear yoke that uses larger u-joints than your '82 has. So along with having to rebuild a TH400 you would also have to get your drive shaft lengthened and altered to use a larger front u-joint. And you would also have to modify your shift linkage if you wanted to swap a TH400 in.

You already have the 700-R4

Big_G is correct, you already have the 700-R4 and it fits.

Parts for a 700, (new clutches, steels, all the rubber and paper gaskets, a Trans-Go shift kit, and an ATSG guide will run you (roughly) $300.
Add a convertor for another $125 or so.
If I was going to rebuild an 82 vintage trans, I'd do a stack of upgrades- 10 vane pump and rings, 89 or later rear planetary set, HD sun shell just for starters.

I put a "Beast" shell in mine and Fairbanks servos. I also replaced the band drum and bought a 2-5/8" wide carbon fiber band. And of course I replaced the TV and pressure regulator springs with stiffer ones.

has your transmission been replaced with a th400?or are you wanting to go to a th400?.. because the guys are right, your car came with the 700r4...altho its the first gen design and somewhat weak, but for stock motor its far better than a th400.

But it's very inexpensive to update it to '87 and later specs.

Guys,

Both my mechanic and I are totally confused. I'm trying to rebuild the transmission, but apparently neither of us really know what it is. In my workshop manual it says its a Turbo Hydramatic 3 speed. On my console it states 1-2-D In the owners manual it doesn't say what type of trans you have, but says if you've got 1-2-OD on the console you have a build in overdrive, if 1-2-D, it's a 3 speed. So does that mean the OD was an option.

And what's this about that I really have a 700r4. From other threads, I've read that's a good thing, so if true great.

But now the question is how can I tell what I have. The mechanic says there is nothing on the casing identifying it. And why would the workshop manual specs be wrong.

Thanks. This is really holding up a rebuild since I don't know what to order.

Cheers,

Well here in the states All 1982 Corvettes came with a 700r4. If anything it would have the TH350 in '82 there wasn't even an option to have a 4-speed. Look at pics on Google images of a 700r4 and a th350 and th400. Then crawl under your car and see/compare with what you have. It's is possible that the previous owner changed some things out. Good luck hope this helps. Keep us updated and well help as much as we can.

Whereas the oil pans on TH350's and TH400's are an irregular shape, the oil pan on a TH700R4 is rectangular. That's a dead giveaway. And the TH700R4 doesn't have a vacuum modulator sticking out of it's right front side. Instead of using a vacuum modulator a TH700R4 uses a throttle valve cable that is attached to the carburetor or throttle body. If you have a TH700R4 I suggest you keep it as it's a much better transmission than the TH350. And with minimal expense it can be beefed up even stronger than the TH400. And with a TH700R4 you get the added benefit of the 30% overdrive 4th gear. I just put a beefed-up TH700R in my '71 big block.

Yes like other members said here: :The shape of the trans. pan will help you identify the trans. Can you post a shot of your pan and someone here can ID? :1sm258fight:
