Well I know some would think i'm crazy but I am in the process of restoring my '81 and am trying to get the smog stuff up to par because it is affecting my performance. I have been unable to find the the air control "switch valve" that the two smog hoses go into. Any ideas on how to find this part? Or maybe it isn't even available? I think the part number was 17064194..

Thanks!!

is this what you need? http://www.ecklers.com/corvette-a-i-r-check-valve-1966-1982.html

no i have the check valves..i'm assuming at this point that they are ok..

What I need is where the two smog hoses(one from each side) go into...its a switch type device...the service manual calls it an "air control switch valve"

The device is plastic I think and both hoses have broken free.
Thanks for your reply...!

oh, you mean the black plastic control right behind the pump? I don t think its available anymore..I probably have a used one on a 81 motor..if you can t get one, let me know, I see if its good and send it to you..

yes i think that's the one...both are broken...I've searched quite a few places and haven't had much luck man...That would be great! I appreciate it!! Let me know..Thanks

I ll look at it tomorrow, I know all the A.I.R. gear is there on that motor, just need to see if its good..is that all you need, just the control ?

Awesome man thanks! One other thing is the plastic "accordian-type" hose from the breather to the a.i.r...mine is broken and haven't found that part either. Of course, knowing how this goes there might be more to come as I start patching things up. haha -Thanks!

There is a place about 45 miles south of me that stocks only emission related stuff. I don't remember the name of the place but I could ask around.

My '82 has two valves. An air diverter valve and an air switching valve; both of them operated by the computer. I was told by my smog man about 10 years ago they're quite expensive and cost about $250 each.

it is two parts, look at this and see if its identical to yours.. appears to be good, let me know which you needhttp://i1041.photobucket.com/albums/b418/fishslayer143/001.jpg

Wow, if its two parts i think just the lower portion where the hoses connect..I had assumed it was one piece but just the lower plastic part I think. Again, I'm assuming that the upper is ok..Thanks!!

I think toobroke is right, the black plastic section is the control switch and the cast alum section is the diverter valve...I ll see if I can get it off tomorrow..PM an address for me to send it to.

I pulled the whole control assembly, seems to be in good shape, was working when I pulled the engine 2 years ago..I ll send it to you tomorrow..anybody else need any smog gear while I m in the mood?

Are you "restoring" car to original? Do you need the smog stuff to pass emissions in your area, or as you said, You think by fixing it you will get better perfprmance? Because if it is the latter and that is the only reason you are redoing it, there are way better things to spend your time on then trying to fix the smog stuff on an 81. Performance is really not affected in a positive way by having it operational. But taking it off solves a lot of issues in my opinion. Again, if a restoration to original is what you are after then Good Luck!! I even have my 81 smog parts in storage, ping me if you have no luck finding something. :O)

I am trying to restore all to original. I won't need it for emissions requirement. Right now with only part of the smog system working the comp is trying to compensate and the car runs terribly when it warms up. I want to get it running well as I complete the other restoration work, so its still drivable. After that I may focus on some other options for improving performance. Great thanks I appreciate it!

If your engine is running terrible the smog stuff isn't the reason. Unless your EGR valve is stuck open (which I really doubt). All the smog stuff does is pump air either into the exhaust manifolds or into the exhaust pipe just ahead catalytic converter. And that doesn't affect your engine's performance at all. You'll have to check your timing and check your spark plugs. And if they're okay check each of your spark plug wires with an ohmmeter. They should all be around 25,000 ohms resistance. If one of them shows zero resistance then that wire has a broken (actually burned out) center core and should be replaced.

Thanks for the info! I may have gotten some bad info from my mechanic. He said that at least part of the reason the car is running rough when it warms up is due to the open smog system. Once warm the computer takes over and tries to compensate for the open emission stuff. The car runs smooth and perfect cold. I have new plugs and wires but I'll check them again. I haven't replaced the EGR but I'll think about doing that. Thanks again...

Hey I got the valve part! Thanks so much!! I got it swapped out this weekend just waiting on a couple new hoses. One less head ache for me...I'll let you know how it goes when I get all the parts back on the car. Thanks again!!

glad to help..I had both hoses in great condition, if you had said you needed them, I could have sent them too.

i thought mine were good, but they seemed a little brittle so i decided to go ahead and replace...thanks though!!

Well after the replacement of several vac hoses and the smog control valve the car is running somewhat better. I still have the inconsistencies in performance once the car is warmed up. When driving...holding a constant throttle...the car isn't cutting out or sputtering just feels like surges in power? The plugs and wires are fairly new...any ideas? Stuck egr?
