I have a '85 that has been converted to a 6 speed. I need to replace the shift boot. Any help on how to do this?

To remove the shift boot, you have to remove the center console. To do this there area number of steps. First, remove the shift ***. Then unfortunately you have to remove the seats. Then remove the console trim panels. Then remove the console compartment floor protector. Bolts to do this have covers on them. Then unscrew the screws mounting hte console to the instrument panel. Unplug any electrical connectors. Then tilt the rear of the console upo the slide the front tab back and out of the instrument panel.

Hoping to tag on to your response to 85 boot shifter question. I have an '84 with auto transmission and just need to replace the shifter boot. I've how to remove the knob and have already taken out lots of screws so it seems ready to lift off the console plate....but something under the front cupholder area is holding it down. What is next, please? thanks, brian

Maybe a 85 is different from a 88...but on mine I did not have to remove seats. Job went pretty fast, hardest thing was the snap ring on the shift knob because I did not have quite the right tips for it.
Best investment you can make is to buy a service manual for your car...not cheap, but if you plan on doing any of the work yourself, you'll need it
