Well my little project has become bigger. The engine is all apart and I might as well go the rest the distance. I will pull the engine out and make it a 383 stroker.

My questions is what pistons should I get and what size?

Thanks again for you help on this.

If your block has never been bored your machine shop will likely bore it .030" over. Just get the new age hyperutectic flat top pistons. They are very strong and can be fitted as close as the old cast pistons. What heads do you have on it right now? What is the combustion chamber size? 62cc or 76cc? With 62cc heads and flat top pistons your compression ratio will be about 10.5 to 1. Forged pistons were the only way to go many years ago but most everyone is now using the new hyperutectic pistons. What camshaft are you going to use? If you don't have low gears stay within reason on the camshaft's duration. Maybe 220-230 degrees at the most. At 240-250 degrees the idle is poor and you'll have trouble building enough vacuum to operate your power brakes.

you can get a complete matched 383 rotating assembly , in cast or forged from Summit. they run $800- $ 4000.. depends on what you want..a basic cast crank with hyper. pistons, or a full balanced all forged set-up w/I beam rods..I personally have a full balanced Scat assembly with forged 4340 steel crank, forged flat top 10.4 compression pistons , H beam rods. But mine is on the extreme end with redline at 6800rpm. its just a question of how much $$ you want to spend, and how much power you want to build and not come apart.also, how hard are you gonna push it?...I can t remember what you have, is that a 2 bolt main block?if it is, I wouldn t overdo it.

My redline is 5500. You got a link for that greek you just wrote?

Greek! thats funny! seriously Chief , there are as many options in crank/piston/rod combos as there are for camshafts..have you found a good machine shop to do the block? I would ask them for recomendations or call Summit tech line.. They are very knowledgable.. if your block is 2-bolt, you cannot go too extreme.. probably a good cast crank, Speed Pro hyper pistons , flat top 10;1 compression. if you won t turn more than 5500..something similar to this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ESP-B13405E030/

If you don't have aftermarket 6" rods those are the wrong pistons. I believe your engine has the stock 5.7" rods.

If stock, this should be correct, you will need the longer rods. Also, the bottom of the (stock) block will likely need to be machined to accomodate the stroker crank. I sometimes wished I'd have stroked mine but will do it next time using full scat parts, new block, all extreme end like Fish's (just color me green with envy).

.030 over flat top FORGED pistons are still the way to go. The skirts on a stroker motor are short, you need all of the strength that you can get. Besides, how good can any coating really be, if it wears off after a few miles?

I have never seen the coating worn off of a hyperutectic piston yet. And I've seen some with over 200,000 miles on them.

toobroke, you and I both run forged pistons .. yeah, they re a little noisey when cold, but you won t tear one up. hyper.s are good for moderate builds tho.

Forged pistons will bend but they'll never break.

Chief, here s something you might find interesting. it may give you some insight about whats involved in stroking a motor...http://www.hotrod.com/howto/hrdp_0203_how_to_stroke_any_engine/first_steps.html

My 383 was kind of a budget build. Cast Eagle crank that's internally balanced. Sealed Power H860CP Hypereutectic pistons. Went a little crazy with the cam, but with the side pipes I get a lot of double takes people making sure it's a C3 making that sound. I've been running it for 2 years now, and it hits 6000 rpm when ever I open it up. Oh and there's a real big smile on my face when I open it up now. I think you'll really like the results.:thumbsup3:

Considering the sheer hell I went through for 22 years with my broken spine I'm amazed I am still very limber. I can't twist very far though because 4 of my vertebra are fused together now.
