Hi All, Got my first vette 3 weeks ago. I am new at this, it is a 2000 coupe, i have done the headlight thing and the flasher thing, now Auoto zone says the Alternator is bad? It would not start last night put it on a charger for 10 minutes and all is fine, it started today, I was at A Zone and had them test the batt and it was good, then he said it was the Alt, So i bought one but before i put it in i just want to ask, could it be a loose belt? I have readings of 12.7 to 13 while driving?? Please help... Thank you , Great site..

Does the belt feel loose?
Did they test the ALT to come up with this conclusion? :toocrazy: I would have it tested if nothing is showing up as the smoking gun. Check all of the cables. I just hate to see you throw parts at the problem.
Does this vette have an underdrive pully that you know of?
I personally like to see 13 to 14.2v while driving on my cars.

Thank you VMag for the quick response, they tested it thru the battery? As i was waiting on a reponse i was looking to see if i could tighin the belt, clueless there so i just started jigglin wires on the alt and the battery got in and started it and now it is showing 13.8 to 13.9 at idle. Go figure. What do you think? I think i am gonna take this 230 dollar alt right back to them. Let me know, and thanks again.

Keep an eye on it for a few days. The belt has a tensioner that keeps it tight but they do wear out over time and there should be two or three lines on it that helps you determine if it needs replaced or not(like a guage). I would have to look at mine to be able to explain this better. Maybe someone can chime in

Thank you again, if what you are talking about is on the passenger side in front of the block i see it and the markings show it is in the middle mark or slightly to the looser side. Can it be adjusted ? Thank you.

I don't believe that these are adjustable or serviceable. I think these are pretty much disposible. Our forum vendors can help with a good replacement if needed.
Good luck!
