I've only tried using a clay bar once, I read up on it a little bit and as far as I know there is not much maintenence for the clay bar itself. I think that once it gets all dirty color that is the end of it.

If the bar isnt to dirty you can use it again or use it on your daily driver or wifes car. to store it spray some of the detailing spray or the spray lube it came with on it and seal it up in a sandwich bag. When its to dirty throw it away cause you will end up scratching your car if you use it again.

Theres no maintenance really, just keep it stored in an air tight container and put a squirt of detail spray or your preferred lube in with it to keep it moist. Store somewhere it won't get above 80* otherwise it'll melt and get stuck to the container.

You can use it as many times as its still good for... theres no set number. Basically stretch, fold, stretch, fold, stretch fold, then examine... if it looks marbled with dirt or you can see large particles throw it away. If it looks clean after stretching and folding it use it again.

OK, so this is what I don't understand. All that dirt it pulls from the cars finish is stuck in it? Why would you want to use this multiple times?

You're not pulling dirt, more stuff like paint overspray, fallout, and things of that nature. By twisting and folding it onto itself after each panel any potentially harmful stuff is pretty much burried into the middle.

When it becomes too dirty you simply toss it out. On a very rough paint job thats never been clayed you might only get one use. On a car thats pampered and maintained you can get dozens of uses...

In the event you do get marring or something from the clay you can always polish it out. Clay is just surface preparation to get you ready for polishing and paint correction so by design you'd be polishing afterwards anyways.

You need to make sure that the car is really clean before you start to clay bar it!

Then how often do you recommend clay bar? If you are pulling out that, after one time you should be done with that, right?

I use the clay ONCE on my Vette then on the other cars. I'll spend the $20 on the next bars for the vette and if you drop it, THROW IT AWAY!!!!!!

This depends on where you live and how dirty you let your car get. It will be diffrent for diffrent people.

Like was mentioned it depends entirely on each individual situation. Garaged vs. not garaged. Daily driven vs. weekend toy. Near a city or in the countryside. Dry climate vs. snowy winter climate. All these things and many more play a role, theres really no "one size fits all" answer to this.

The best advice I can give you is to take a look at this writeup... it'll help you to gauge when to clay:

once the clay is contamiated it should be discarded.
You dont want to use it if its been over used already. you could really damage your finish
