: Im finally finishing my paint job
Corvette_Mike 09-11-2010, 02:33 PM I painted my vette this past spring. I finally started color sanding my clear coat and buffing and polishing my paint.
I sanded the clear with 1500 grit. I used 3M products. Pics really dont do justice on before and after pics of buffing.

This is the products I used. The white pad for the cut and the black pad for polishing.

I spent most of the mornig on the hood. Im an old school painter, and I realy liked these foam pads better than the old wool pads. I started on the driver door and back deck. Alot of work but well worth it.
Corvette Mike
Im a nOOb here. Be easy on the nOOb.

mat helm 09-11-2010, 05:18 PM I like to use foam pads except for the final buff stage. There's also a trick you can use while sanding to see if you've got it perfectly smooth. While wet sanding, use a spreader like a squeegee across the surface to squeegee the water off. It'll show if you still have any low spots.
Looks good in the pics, cept maybe for a spot at the windshield pass side next to the raised part of the hood. Course that could just be the pics.
VetteAholic 09-11-2010, 06:59 PM Like GLASS!!! Awesome.
RogerQ 09-12-2010, 07:03 AM Awesome work Mike!

fordean 09-12-2010, 07:49 AM Mike Can you lay out the Process Starting.
After applying two coats of clear. How long do you let set up before you sand.
Step 1? Do you Sand 1500 wet first light and just go over area once then move on?
Step 2.?
ch@0s 09-12-2010, 08:34 AM When I grow up I wanna be like Mike.. Great job brother.:thumbsup3:

All this is just my opinion. Painters have different ways of reaching the same final outcome. Im sure there are more knowlageable people than I can give you better info than I can.
I painted my car a few months ago. Just to much other stuff going on. The pro's can do it right after painting. I have been retired from painting professionaly since 1997. Alot has changed since then.
I painted this car in my garage at home. I put 4 coats of clear on it when I painted it. The paint was nice and hard when I wet sanded it. Thats good, because I didnt burn the paint anywhere.
I started ths early sat. sept 11th. and finished it up this morning. I colorsanded the whole car with 1500 grit wet.
Then I usd the 3M cut and buffed the whole car. Then today I machine polished it with the 3m polish. Then I did a final hand wax.
C4 for sure 09-12-2010, 10:06 AM Hell Mike, that's some pretty nice work for shooting it in your garage. I've seen some cars come out of booths that didn't look as good, all depends on the guy holding the gun.
Marv02 09-12-2010, 10:11 AM I need to machine buff mine out Mike.
Now I wish I painted mine Black Cherry instead of the Stock Red.
Corvette_Mike 09-12-2010, 04:04 PM I cant get photobucket to work today. As soon as it works again, I'll post up some finished pics. Anyone else having problems with photo bucket?

blakngold4life 09-16-2010, 05:07 AM Looks great, I still need to do that to mine. I already have all the stuff, same as yours, but I'm very nervous about the wet sanding process. How do you know how much to sand before you go to far?

If you see fiber glass, you've gone too far..:smack:
While sanding, you can use a new bondo spreader as a squeegee. While its wet (as you're sanding, or by spraying soapy water) run the spreader across the surface and you'll see if there are still any low spots or craters. Don't use an actual squeegee because it will take all the water off and not show you everything. Of course be very careful around the corners and edges as the clear is at it's thinnest there.
Learn this from a DVD called paint-u-cation (color sanding and buffing) years ago.
Hope this helps...
