I bought new weatherstriping for the hatch on my 87 should it be glued in or just pushed into the groove, the one one there is not glued which makes it nice to remove?

Thanks Jim

I don't have a rear hatch on my vette, but my first thought would be to use a thin bead of clear non harding silicone. Would keep it snug and in place but still removable if needed.

You can do either. Keep in mind that if you drive in the rain or park outside on a rainy day, water can collect on the outside of the hatch. In that case, use weatherstrip adhesive, sold at any parts store.

The different Vette parts suppliers also have a kit that you can drill a drain hole in the corner of the hatch, complete with drain hose, to eliminate the excess water accumulation.

I Agree w/Robs 1988, Use The Proper 3M Adheisive, Before Hand You Might Want To Put in the Aftermarket Drains (they go in each corner) Which The Corvette Vendors (Sponsors)on This Forum Offer, They work Great.:thumbsup3: And Well Worth The $$

I changed all my weatherstrips including the hatch on my 87 about 4 weeks ago. I did not glue the hatch strip. i just fitted it in the groves and has been working fine.

i bought all my weather strips from corvette central. it was exspensive to do them all, but they were good quality, fit well, and what a big difference it made. no more rattles and noise.

That has to be nice to go from noisy to quiet!

Don't waste your money on a drain kit. Just drill a hole on each side a little smaller than a pencil diameter. If you look in from the wheel well side (after removing inner fender) you will be able to see where to drill through so that the water that builds up front by the c-piller will drain off into the wheel well. Seal the edges of the hole with a little clear nail polish then install the weatherstrip.
If you do this there should be no reason to have to glue the strip on. The pressure from the glass against the strip does 95% of the job of holding it tightly sealed.

I think this is what the guy did when my Vettes weather stripping was replaced.

i replaced my weatherstrip 4 days ago i used super w/s adhesive now car leaks worse than ever. when i close the doors it pushes the rubber back and water runs in around the top mostly and front a lil. i dont think im an idiot but i cannot see what ive done wrong. when i put the targa on for the first time i needed help pushing and lining up bolts the second and third time seemed alot easier but still 2 man job now. also the corner where targa meets door rubber cant get it too mesh well. the old stuff was the same but not quite as bad. i got kit corvette central. on another note pretty lame they didnt include windlace that is on front lower door. $60 per side extra- and that was the worst part on my car i took it off in anticipation and it deteriorated in my hand. any tips be very appreciated

mine leaked a little at first when i hit it with the hose- then the weatherstripping must have molded to the doors and window and no leak. as for the top- i had same problem once i got top on(i used longer bolts) i left it on in the sun and garage for a week and now its not a problem(put original bolts back on) as far as the lower doors i bought all the weather stripping for the car. it was an exspensive ordeal.

Thanks for the tip :thumbsup3: I may just do this when I change out my weather stripping.

I would glue it, just for added comfort.
