I have an 85 with the stock aluminum wheels
Did these wheels have a clear coat from the factory and whats the best way to clean them?
I remember a few of my Harley's with the aluminum
mag style wheels they were hard to clean they had a clear coat you were not cleaning the aluminum but trying to clean the clear coat that used to get wormy after a while.

To be honest I'm not sure if they clear coated the aluminum wheels back in '85 - either way when you're unclear as to the surface you're working on its best to use the most mild approach to get the job done.

A mixture of car wash shampoo and water would be the best approach, if it turns out they're bare aluminum harsh cleaners can potentially discolor or cloud up the surface. Better safe than sorry, at least until you are 100% positive you know what kind of surface you're dealing with.

I agree with dylan, just some good soap and elbow grease is what I would use.

Unless your wheels are chrome I don't think you have to think too much about how to clean them.
