How do you know what stall speed to pick for a converter? I have a '85 350 Automatic transmission. I'm looking doing a gear swap here soon and would like to add bigger stall converter to the car. Make it a little more peepy! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello If your still running the stock motor that runs out of power around 5000 rpm's, with the 700r4's very low first gear then you add a lower gear in the rear, 1st gear will become very short. Then add stall converter on top of that. you will be shifting out of first gear in the first 20 feet. If your motor is stock stay with the converter thats in the car for now. Plus your MPG will go to crap.

Usually with a stock 350/700-r4 most builders wont suggest beyond 2400. As a cheap alternative, you can you the torque converter from a 4.3 liter s10 with the same trans. On a 350 it stalls about 1800-2100 as opposed to 1200. The last post was accurate, the higher your stall rpm the worse your city mpg will be. Its not really an issue on the highway with lock up torque converters. Hope this helps.
