: power steering pump question
tugracer 08-09-2010, 07:22 PM There is a loud whine coming from somewhere near the pump, eliminated a few things with the mechanic, he thought it was the serpentine belt itself.
Was wondering if anyone has experienced this as a symptom of a worn PS pump?
Thanks
robs1988 08-09-2010, 08:53 PM Yes, it's a symptom of a worn pump shaft bearing, but it's also the symptom of many other things. If you have one, you can use a cheapo stethoscope to help pinpoint it.

I also get that whine at times when I make turns and actually make the steering pump work. I could say it sounds as if a whale were crying.
:crybaby:

Now THAT is funny! I busted out laughing when I read that.

Now I'm wondering what symptom of many other things could mean?
I'll get a new pump on SAP.
Thanks

I would also Love to know what other symptoms....... Now does anyone know if changing the power steering pump is somewhat difficult on a 92??
tugracer 08-11-2010, 12:48 PM I put a new Gates serpentine belt on as the mechanic suggested, before going the steering pump route, the loud whine has been eliminated.
He is a master mechanic.

Thanks for posting the solution. I have to look forward to buying a new belt anyways :X. Last time I went to Advance auto parts they did not have one in stock or have any AT ALL. How lame is that.....
tugracer 08-12-2010, 11:29 AM The Advanced closest to me didn't have any either, but Oreilly did, $41, same as evrywhere else.
I'll add, that the belt that was on there, {I don't know the proper name for it} had a cross cut looking design as oppsed to the straight line groove, not sure if it was original or not.
Sorry but I've done nothing but ride and race motorcycles since 1971 and most of this is new material for me, it's great fun too!
Thanks.

Ah there may have been the problem, I believe stock never came with cross cut. Straight lined is the deal, to match the grooves on the pulleys.
P.S. I believe the belt either goes by the name of Serpentine Belt or Accessories Belt.

If you suspect the serpentine belt, shoot WD-40 on it. If it quiets down then you've found the problem. If it doesn't quiet down, then the problem is something else. If kept full of oil, power steering pumps last almost forever. I'm still running the original pump on my '82 and it has 270,000 miles on it.
tugracer 08-12-2010, 07:31 PM Yep, as stated, put a new Gates surpentine belt on and the loud whine is gone.
The mechanic applied his magic wire brush to the old belt, silicone spray, WD 40 also, nothing worked.
WOW, good to know the steering pump can go that distance!
Thanks.

That is good to know! I am sure you were happy when the noise left when the new belt went on!

Anything that spins on a pulley or has an electric motor has bearings of some sort, especially with something belt driven. As bearings waste, they can make many different types of sounds with any 'driven' component. Could even be a belt problem causing it, or weak tensioner.
