Damn that was not fun! This has never happened before, usually when I brake hard it comes to a nice stop but this time the tires squeeled and smoked a bit.
Does that seem odd to anyone?
Should I look further into this or is it just that I slammed on the brakes extra hard?

That could very well be what happened, I mean if you really slam on your brakes they will sometimes lock up, but you really have to slam them. Why did you have to do that?

On ABS systems, this can happen if the tires leave the ground even for a split second (over a lip in the road etc..), when you're in "oh $hit" mode on the brakes. I think this happens because while the tire is off the ground the ABS pumps a few times and the tire is still locked up, so it interprets this to be a fault in the speed sensor or whatever, so it dose what it's suppose to and turns itself off. It's suppose to recheck itself and turn back on with in a few milliseconds, but I think being that hard on the brakes it thinks that releasing them for even a millisecond may be the difference between life and death.
